My tips for relocating with kids :)

1. Keep them informed
As soon as you know there’s even a possibility of relocation, include your children in the conversation. Don’t wait until it’s a sure thing and then spring it on them. Listen to their concerns and tell them to come to you with their fears, anxieties and questions.

2. Explain the process
Don’t assume your children understand the process,. Very young children will be confused about what they’re able to take and what they won’t. Try and provide as much details as possible especially when it involves their toys, and personal belongings.

3. Try and involve them in the home buying process
It’s not an easy task bringing children along for a house search.  But listening to their opinions makes a difference in how they settle in the new home.

4. Have a going away get together
Before you move, throw a going-away party for your kids with their school friends or any children they may have formed a bond with.

5. Allow for some fun time
Spend a night in a hotel with an indoor pool. Go to fun, kid-friendly restaurants for meals. Set aside time to see a movie or enjoy some fun-filled activity.

6. Know the new school
School is the centre of your child’s universe. He’ll only be happy if he’s happy in school.
As soon as you know where you’ll be living, contact the school and get information on how to register and what documents and paperwork are required.
Specifically ask about transitioning between classes and what supplies your child will need.
As soon as possible, meet personally with the guidance counsellor, principal and your child’s teachers and take a tour of the building with your child, so he can familiarize himself with his new surroundings.

7. Move in the summer
Move during the summer, if possible, to minimize school -change problems.

8. Just ask
Ask your child how you can make this transition easier for him or her

9. Give priority to their rooms
Having a place they feel comfortable and can call their own will work wonders for their settling in. Allow them to choose how they want their rooms decorated or set-up.
10. Let them explore
Depending on the age of your children, assign them tasks to gather information about the new place, for example, location of a gym, or activities available.
