I understand the strict divide between males and females in S Arabia. However as a male foreigner can I talk to foreign females on the street? For instance if I see a Filipino women and want to chat to her is this forbidden? I am not talking about chat up lines here merely human interaction. What about clubs if I want to start a bookclub for men and women?

You'll find greatly diverse thoughts (and experiences) on this. My 2 cents: A blunt 'NO'. Stay safe!
Besides, if you see a strange Filipino woman on the street and approach her to 'talk,' I can't quite believe you're not chatting her up. Call me cynical
Now the questionfor alleycat is why are you so cynical:)
Still waiting for any good answers to my question.

But don't call us to bail you out BTW, is there such a thing as 'bail' here?
So the message is a man cannot talk to a non western female at all outside. Does that apply to my wife also:)

Usually husbands and wives don't talk anyway
eveningstar, the tradition of this kingdom doesnt allow you to act so openly. Just try to talk to anyone on the street (a foriegner-not necessarily to be a philipino),you will not get any good response 'coz even the opposite sex will be scared to talk to you 'coz of the religious police around,so its better if you make some friends from some famous compounds,it will work there for sure !

Okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy... you wanted to know why I am cynical??
Well, you just informed us (above) that you're married. But in an earlier post you said:

So if you're just looking for 'human interaction,' why not talk to men? And if you're married, why would you want to talk to talk to some Filipino woman you see on the street anyway?
So you see, I am highly confuzzled!

But how would talking to somebody on the street involve ego? That's what he's asking about--not life long friendship
If you need help, please send a message!
youd be surprised.

Adan makes a valid point that I want to enlarge upon. I SWORE that I wasn't going to let living in KSA change who I am ... and on that note, when I sometimes see other western women shopping and I pass them in the aisle, I say 'Hello.' They seem surprised and taken aback. They say 'hello' in return but if I don't initiate the greeting with other expat women, they don't. This is something I have noticed here and I have NO idea why it's like this so it's not just about the 'opposite sex' !!

well said...lol
I also agree with Adnan, to avoid any questions just don't. If I really want to talk to women without any problems, I go to hospitals and just think of any problem with myself then chat away...lol. (Even a simple cold, just to make an excuse)
Hi there, stay out of trouble, this happened to me,I worked one year in Tabuk Saudi, I was walking with one of my coleague and he said lets say hi to one of the female staff from canda,I didn't see the Matawaa where he came from and so fast,I think they watch us, and he was very rude,he start questioning me why r u talking to a strange lady on the street,is she your wife? I said no just someone from Canada and I am canadin and new to Saudi just I am saying hi and introducing my self,he said you are not in Canada and asked the lady to cover up her head and leave, and he told me never talk to any female unless she is your wife, this is the Saudi law.So my friend stay safe!!!!!!
Alliecat wrote:But don't call us to bail you out BTW, is there such a thing as 'bail' here?
Yes, there is. Though it's very different from the 'bail' we know of In fact, police things are unpredictable. I remember once I saw a junior sargeant entered the office of his senior (without seeking permission even), told him off and left. And the officer didn't say even a word. I was like
To see is to believe.
So try it and be ready to face the consequences either good or bad.
Wishing you good luck!
I guess you do know the place called Saudi Arabia where you stepped your foot on.

I think the point we've all agreed on is you can't have 'mates' of the opposite sex in KSA (upon pain of the lash)
