Thanks Popova, I believe you put in an earlier post that your non EU family member is travelling soon, could you update after that to let us know if they had any problems using the new eresidence card when travelling please, my husband is non EU so I would be interested to know.

Lets first wait to be issued...but what i was advised by the dept....no issues should arise using the card....since present both id and residence.

After studying my new residence card a little more, I noticed that the card now does not say that it is NOT for travel any more. I wonder if you can now use it for travel within Schengen. I know that the Dutch ID card for instance can be used for such purpose.

Someone said the new card has the old card number on it somewhere - where is it and does it include the letter A for alien.

am guessing its there for cross referencing purposes as theres lots of transactions in this country that will be difficult to change to the new card numbers so they would need to be able to cross reference.

for EU citizens the new e-residence card which doubles as national ID card allows for travel within the Schengen area ( which is border check free anyway !) but not to all EU countries (ie UK)

For non-EU citizens to travel within the EU you need to present the residence card and passport.

Yes it is printed on the back (very small) and with the "A".

I´ve been reading through the thread hoping to find the email address to contact them about my ID cards but despite my eyes now being on the verge of bleeding I can´t seem to spot it.

Can anybody please help me by letting me have the email address I need to contact with regard my appointment please.

As i had mentioned in my previous posts...im still waiting for the new cards to be issued...thus i had called the dept today and was advised that the cards take up to 6 weeks to be issued....and will be advise via email...up till now  5 weeks ...

I got my appointment today for the 3rd of April according to my lawyer (early in the morning).

Hmm, just noticed that it is a Wednesday which is quite weird as they are closed according to their Website.

Well maybe the lawyer been pulling some strings...

Hello, I sent an email for my appointment 2 weeks ago and no answer arrived.  I'll keep on waiting then... I just want to know if I can have my discount on buses with my old id card or my residence certificate...and till when? I'm really worried about it even because I heard some people have their appointments in May!!! That's crazy! Thanks all...

Regarding the buses - they said that ID cards are expired in March 2013 but we can use other residence documents to prove it up to June 2013.

They are not replying on emails anymore (I don't know why) - yesterday I was in CEA and they said to apply for appointment in the room 5 at the morning. Tomorrow will try.

What???? I live in Gozo I cannot go there only for taking an appointment...ok it's valid till june but I don't have an appointment yet and they take 8 weeks to issue this new card...

old residence cert is acceptable on the buses as identity document until June 30th 2013.

Hi everyone, I have an important question, hope someone can help... I lived in Malta 2 years ago, I bought a car and gave it to someone because I got trouble with the engine and this person wanted to fix it and everything so i let him the car and a fews weeks after that i got back to my country for profesional reasons. However a few months after my return from Malta, I received a call from my former maltese owner because he received many mails telling that I have to pay fines (because of the car), even the police came to his appartment looking for me but I was already in my country since a few months. I think the guy I let my car succeed to fix it and used it and get fines (and of course the car was at my name). Today (so 2 years after that story) I want to come back in Malta as I love this country but I would like to know if I can get trouble with this old story about fines???? Do you think it could avoid me getting the new EU id card? May I have some trouble with the police?? Many thanks for your reply as I'm quite worried about that...

I am waiting the reply for a month already. I really don't know what to say about this and stay polite at the same time...

I hope you'll share with us your 'making an appointment' experience. especially if there are some odd working days / hours involved.

A friend got appointment email today, for early June

A friend of mine....went at 5am to wait for appoitment....spent 5hrs just for number  and the appoitment was given for june

if the police came looking for you it sounds as if it is something more serious than just 'fines'.

Obviously you will get into trouble with the police and have to pay the 'old' fines when you come back. I'm not sure but really doubt if that would interfere with your residency application.

Many thanks for your reply but according to my former owner I received like  around 10 fines...

i think you will find irrespective of who was driving the car that YOU will be held responsible for the fines etc as you didnt transfer the car.

Ok, as discussed - I am sharing my today experience.

1. Officially, they answer the e-mails, but they have absolutely no time to do it. The department is really overcrowded.
2. You can send an email and wait if you have no urgent issues with residence permits or ID. You probably will get an appointment of July-August
3. If you have any issues (like travelling in the nearest future) it's better to come and show the evidence of your deal (tickets etc)
4. There is a separate queue to room 5 for appointments. Ask who is the last one and keep your place! There are a lot of people who wants "just ask" and it would be neverending story if you let them to come in. No jumping the queue to anybody - it's you chance to receive the appointment in one day.

I receive mine after 2 hours in a queue (really lucky, yeah) for 20th of May. They have some extra slots for urgent cases in April-May now (I saw the journal with blank lines in it).

so here is my question then – what happens if we stay here for several months with expired Maltese IDs and no previous resident permit? it is illegal obviously, however there is no way to obtain the new documents before the end of March.

Yes, exactly. Room 6-7 are for them, who has an appointment already.
Room 5 is for arranging the appointment and for all other questions.
