its now possible (required ?) that you make an appointment, rather than just queue and hope they see you before they close at 11:30am

Toon

it has been said by some applicants yesterday that they were told everyone has to re-apply as its to update their records....wouldnt you think if that was the case they'd include registering everyone for tax...and allocating or notifying the tax authorities of every applicant so they can be allocated a SSC number.

That way they be sure of capturing the majority of residents - not that it ensures payment of tax and SSC. But at least theyd be recorded as potential taxpayers

Yes, on the page listing the forms

Toon

thats going to be one helluva busy diary...

georgeingozo

20000 people at 75 per day, working 4 days a week is about 15 months

Toon

so what happens with those people who are on the verge of being able to apply ofr permanent residence with the 5 qualifying years - if they wanted to - what happens to the qualifying years prior to this new identity document...?

georgeingozo

Shouldn't make Any difference

Toon

is that figure accurate I thought it was closer to 25000 of all nationalities - does that include immigrants plus both asylum seekers and failed ones too.... and just how long does each appointment take...

nb where in the page is the info about making an appointment

georgeingozo

http://www.foreign.gov.mt/default.aspx?MDIS=552

Applicants are invited to submit their application for the e residence document by appointment.

In order to set up an appointment kindly send an email on eresidence.mfa@gov.mt

A confirmation of the appointment will be sent by email.

20,000 was a guess by me - the 75 is an estimate of how many they saw on Monday by someone who went - if its 25,000 then takes us to Summer 2014

Anyone else just get disgusted with this government from time to time .. grrrrrrrrrr!

Toon

"Each applicant must also fill up form ID 1A

The old ID card and residence documentation (with the exception of residence permit stickers affixed on the passports) has to be returned to this Department upon an application for the new residence document being made"

this being the case what do we use in the interim period - potentially 8 weeks - for bus and ferry and anything else - and for newbies to the island - such as bank accounts internet tv phone services and am sure much more

georgeingozo

the person who went on Monday was issued a receipt which they were told could be used for ID purposes. Personally I'm photocopying both ID card and residency certificate before handing over.

what about the maltese who will need to apply for theirs too.... hmmmmm methinks chaos will ensue...

georgeingozo

well, as long as you ask before end-June for an appointment, its up to them if the appointment date is later. In reality, I suspect will be extended to end year, but I'd still request an appointment soonish

georgeingozo

My email to the Ministry just bounced !

rainbow3

Is that your email to make an appointment?  If so then thats very helpfulfor you, ummmmmm NOT :)

Maybe they have been inundated with too many emails

its that email address, but was asking a question, not booking an appointment

Toon

Someones experience.

"today (15th January - the first day for EU nationals to apply) our application was made at 3, Castille Place. The proceedings were as follows:
1) we queued OUTSIDE from 8.30a.m. (mercifully before the storms arrived) because entry was restricted following scuffles the previous day. There were already around 30 people inside the building. We were allowed into the reception area after about 75 minutes and given our ''tickets'' (49 & 50);
2) officials appeared to be processing around 10-12 applicants per hour, depending upon whether all of the documents were made available to them;
3) after 2 hours, in a generally pleasant environment, we were called in for our document check. ONLY the documents quoted on our form Js were required, although a photocopy of our existing Registration Certificates was also taken. This took a further 15 minutes and both mine and my partner's papers were taken at this point including our ID cards.. new photographs and specimen signatures were taken by the official and recorded electronically;
4) we then had to wait in the holding area for a further half-hour, and were called in separately to complete the process when a receipt/certificate was issued which should serve as a temporary ID card;
5) we should be notified by post when our new cards are available for collection from Melita Street.
As expected, a long morning but not that arduous."

georgeingozo

just realised that appointments can only be made by email - what about those who don't use the internet ?

Toon

I beat you by 15 minutes. Looks like it is not that busy after all.

georgeingozo

"I didnt know you could specify which month you wanted it in georgeingozo, is that appointment for you and your wife?" - yes, non-EU family member has to be accompanied by their EU partner

I didn't specify as such, I just gave dates when couldn't both make it. I was very impressed by their professionalism, which was the same experience every time I've dealt with them over the years

rainbow3

Thanks george, sounds like they are being very professional and they are sorting things out well, I think the appointment system is a good idea. Hope they didnt give you a really early morning appointment as you have to travel from Gozo.

me3512

I just requested one as well, Ill update you when I hear anything.

rainbow3

I know you asked for comments from people who have got an appointment but if it helps, I sent an email yesterday morning and have still had no reply, I assume they have had a big response after publishing the email address a couple of days ago.

me3512
