Safety in Belize

I am planning a trip to Belize with the idea of moving there. I am a single woman traveling alone and my kids have concerns for my safety. Any thoughts, advice etc?

Any input would be very much appreciated.

Belize is a nice place to visit. Just use extra common sense and you should be fine. It is in the top 5 countries for the highest murder rates. I would stay out of Belize City and try not to be out in towns after dark although crimes do happen in daylight quite a bit too. We were there looking to relocate and just got back. I have seen a huge decline over the last 15 years in the country with a big increase in crime. Needless to say we have scratched Belize off our list. There are more issues too but I won't go into them here.
