Job offer in KL. Is the compensation package adequate?

Hi,

I have just joined the forum and this is my first post. My query is related to a job offer that I have received from a leading Public Relations consultancy in KL for the position of Account Manager.

While the role sounds interesting, I am only worried about the salary being offered. The offer on the table includes the following:

1. Salary of RM 8000 per month
2. Bonus - nothing specified but will be a factor or profitability, performance, etc. The firm has apparently paid out a bonus each year for the last few years
3. The firm will cover shipping costs and also provide one way airfare for one person from India to KL
4. 18 days annual leave
5. Cover with Group Term Life and Hospital & Surgical insurance
6. Will cover accommodation for upto 30 days at a hotel close to the work place

My wife and I are mulling over the offer and at the same time she is also looking for a suitable job in KL but are also preparing for the scenario where I would be the only earning member for a few months.

We dont have kids, but do plan to start a family shortly.

We don't have a very lavish lifestyle but do like socialising with friends often (currently know no one in KL :)). We also don't plan to immediately buy a car and will use public transportation.

Given all of this, we have the following questions:

1. Is this offer sufficient for 2 people to live a comfortable life? I am assuming that my wife should be able to get a minimum offer of RM 6000 at least (she is a Lead Financial Analyst).
2. Are there any factors that I am missing out? I do have some scope for negotiation and want to make sure I get the best possible package.
3. What would be the expenses that we will incur monthly.

Any inputs will help.

Thanks,

Parik

The package sounds alright for your jobscope, given that you'd be getting bonuses too, but I'm assuming the co will be handling your visa as well as your wife's? I'm afraid it won't be too easy for a foreigner to get a job locally (your wife I mean) so if she can request for a transfer or hook up with a reputable finance co from now, that'd be safer.

The salary is good amount for you to start with.

Besides salary you should ask for some allowance which normaly applicable to local package here such as transport, HP allowance.

Need to allocate for accomodation, depending one the area you will stay, the fully furnish aprt @ condo rentals rage form RM1.8K to RM3K for two bedrooms.

Also pls remind, income tax is applicable to expat as well. the best if you can ask for free tax salary,,which your company pay for the tax.

Hi without kids and a low level social life then doable. Lead financial analyst can mean anything and getting work as a spouse is very difficult especially as employers don't understand the visa situation. 6k is a lot locally for an "executive" level job like what sounds like but that depends - if it is more senior she will have contacts to use to look for jobs in KL.

Do bear in mind expat mags say things like "expats will be on higher rate of tax as they will almost certainly be on more than 250,000 rm a year" (I saw that one recently) and that 8k is only a slightly above average salary in KL so no luxurious lifestyle. Do check medical covers spouse. It won't cover pregnancy of course.

Public transport in KL is a joke and a car is essential really and personally I never use taxis after many bad experiences. You may need to budget for that or live where lrt rubs to work.

Good luck with the move !
