How is life in Riyadh?

Post new topic

uragon

Hi Guys,

I'm new here in forum and i need some opinions about living in Riyadh. I am a Programmer Analysts here in the Philippines, got an offer to work for SAMBA in Riyadh. Right now i am still unable to decide whether i'll grab the opportunity or just settle in my current job.

I'm confident in my skills as a Programmer and i can tell that working with the folks there isn't gonna a problem. The only thing that is bothering me are the news regarding sexual abuse which includes men being raped. I have asked some of the people i know who had been to Saudi Arabia (not Riyadh in particular) and almost all would tell me the same story. I'm not really sure if all of it are just exaggerations or just some rumors they only heard off. :(

That is why i wanted to seek your views and opinions since your guys are already living in there. Is it that scary as they say it?

Thanks for your help in advance.

All the best,

URAGON

Well, to be honest with you, this is the first time I've heard this particular rumor, although nothing surprises me here.  I would say that a guy being raped is a one-in-a-million chance. If you were a pinay, I would say your chances are greatly increased.  However, unless the money is really much better for your particular job, than any other place, I'd say there's no reason to come here.  Only for the money, if it's exceptional.  If you like the company of a female, or having any kind of opposite sex interaction, even platonic, or being able to have a beer after work, or go to a movie, just forget it here.  You will live in an all-male world, both on-duty and in the compound. You can save some money here, sure, but if you can find an agency that will work with you on sending you to Korea, or Taiwan, or SG, or one of the other many destinations OFWs go to, instead of here, then that is preferrable, in my opinion.  But if the money is just sooooooo good as to over-ride all other considerations, then come on over.  Obviously, if the money wasn't real good, neither I nor the majority of other foreigners would be here.  But I wouldn't worry about the rape part. Just don;t let anyone stand behind you. Best of luck.

I've never heard this (and I hear most of the rumors lol) but I do agree with everything Dave said, above.
