Dear Members,

Hope this finds you in good spirits!

I've got a query here. I'm offered a IT job in Kuwait with 13000KWD
I've got 10 years of experience in IT. So is the salary a good reasonable one?

I'm married with a 2yr old kid.

What would be the cost of living in Kuwait? Kindly break down the various components like
1. Housing
2. Food
3. Monthly needs \ expenses
4. Kid's school (near future)
5. Anything else

Thanks a bunch! :)

Thanks Harmony

Yes I did take a look into the forum and many posts were irrelevant or outdated.

Meanwhile an update: Offer revised to 24000 KWD/pm

SO is this a reasonable amount to save some case taking into consideration all of my queries in my previous post?

Thanks for your time!

Harmonie

Hope that other members will soon share their experience with you tune2john!;)

Good Luck,
Harmonie.

hi tune

just a quick clarification - is it 2400 or 24000 KWD per month? if it is in thousands then you might as well pack your bags and take the next flight to Kuwait. You can live ULTRA LAVISH here..

tune2john

Oops that's 24000 KWD per year. Sorry my bad!

Good grief! Got the shock of my life reading this topic below:

https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=10598

The last post on it is sometime in 2011, so is the situation any different now???

Molesting womenfolk??? WTH!! I guess a woman cant walk around freely in public? - This is the kind of information I get from the above post & similar ones. Is this how this country is???

I agree treating other nationals as second-class citizens is common-place across the world. Even in US of A I have witnessed this - though they don't really tell it but show it in their behavior (although I must say if you mind your own business there would be nobody to bother you)

But in high contrast - in Kuwait it seems you wont be let off even if you MYOB!!
I don't wanna enjoy the life with situations like this!!

I need some honest answers here. Will somebody help?

Difficult one to comment on Tune2john, I am English and therefore haven't experienced a lot of what is posted, seen some of it but i think if you just write the negatives it sounds worse than maybe it is. All countries have issues, there is a big divide between nationalities in terms of treatment, a lot worse than some countries not as bad as others, in saying it is Kuwaiti's is not fair as I have seen some of the worst treatment from the same Nationalities but different classes i.e. manager to labourer..... Never seen/known anyone molested, stared at (understatement) and I have friends with Asian wives and my wife finds it annoying but not threatening and it is not the Kuwaiti's that bother her it is the Aisan workers who don't just stare they leer ... not sure where they are visitng to find packs of Kuwaiti's? Whilst I don't want to belittle the treatment they had is it really as widespread as it is made out in the posts, "couldn't leave my wife 5 mins incase a pack of Kuwaiti's decided to have her" really!! Bit of a chip on the shoulder i think.
I have been in Kuwait for 2 years and have enjoyed it, not the most exciting country but has it's moments, the dust/sandstorms are a pain in the a@#$ but hey no where's perfect. 2000 a month, not sure what you're used too, decent apt. 350+, food 150-200, transport car (lease)150-175.....

tune2john

Thanks Rob! That comes as quite a relief!! :)

I agree every country has its itsy bitsy's, so that's why I just didn't wanna generalize the situation there in the first place.

Ok so with your post I get the general idea, with the classes & so on. You're spot on because I'm pretty sure the stare & leer comes from the labourer class because that's pretty much how it is in India too (though I would prefer to call it the 'cheap class' rather than the labourers because here the real 'labourers' tend to toil hard & mind their own business and livelihood. Also I'm ashamed the Asians have earned such a name for themselves - from what you've witnesed.

I'm used to the good things in life wherever I've been so far, had the good opportunity to work in 5 different countries for short terms. So from your classification it seems a good one I presume.

Thanks again!

It's what you make of it, you probably need to join a private club .... Al Corniche or similar near where you are based for pool, social, kids are etc.
I'm fairly easy going, go to work, come home, gym some nights or tennis, weekends by the pool reading, bit of shopping, get plenty of TV/Films downloaded or by them at 1KD per DVD (copies obviously) Eating out isn't too bad, takeaway is easy if you do it online (6alabat.com)
Apartments can be expensive depending on what you are used to, I pay KD500 monthly for an okay 3 bed, Master en-suite, nice bathrooms, decent kitchen, pool and, gym if any utilities aren't free they are buttons currently.
Anything else give me a shout :D

Membership for family at club will run to about 100-150KD per month but will have to be paid in 1 payment.

Thanks for the additional reply on the other relevant stuff Rob!

One other query I've got is, if my wife wants to work will she be able to work there? Are there any formalities I need to get done for the same? Do I need to make any arrangements for the same before I land there?
