Is there a cheap place to visit in France?

My lodging in Paris fell through after I'd already arrived, and I can't keep staying in Paris hotels because they are so expensive. Can anyone suggest some other city I can go to for a while till I can sort things out again in Paris? Someplace I might be glad to have visited?
