Jazan?

Post new topic

Hi
I have been offered a position in Jazan and will be living on a compound in shared accommodation with one other expat. I would appreciate any info about Jazan anyone can offer. From what I have read, it does not seem to have the same opportunities for mixing with expats as say Jeddah or Riyakh.

I work here in Jizan, and I'm an expat.  I'm not sure who you are working with, but I assume that it's at Jazan Economic City Polytechnic college, as only it, and Jazan University even have expats employed.  Except for two employers, there are no expats in Jizan.  Our accommodation is not shared. We all enjoy our own apartments.  If someone told you they are shared, then either they are mistaken, or you work for someone else I'm not familiar with.  The only time we have gone "shared" has been when the rooms are maxxed out on occupancy, and even then it was only temporary.  Several people aren't coming back from Ramadan, so there should still be vacant apartments in late August. You mentioned "mixing with other expats."  Well, you can mix with the men you work with. That's about it. If you mean interactions with female expats, forget it, there are none here as this is a male-only assignment.  The male faculty are the only expats in Jizan. Jizan city (as opposed to Jazan province --note the different spelling)is a small town with a few shopping malls. It's on the Red Sea, and you can take trips to nearby islands, or go snorkeling, or even diving if you are qualified.  But after a few such trips, it starts to get boring again.  Make sure your laptop is in good working order as it will be your main activity, aside from working.  Not much more to tell you. It's a small town with nothing to do besides what I mentioned. You can save a lot of money here. The compound and utilities, internet and satellite are free.  Jeddah and Riyadh are like Las Vegas compared to Jizan.  Our compound is just 3 buildings with a wall around it. No amenities, no restaurants, nothing. Just living quarters, but it's free.  Your social life will be limited to co-workers. Your laptop will be your best friend here.  Jeddah is more tolerant of foreigners and  more "relaxed" with regard to western customs and social interaction.  I could have worked in Jeddah but I chose this location because the salary is much better. So it's a trade-off. Remote locations pay better, generally, and you can save more money.  If money isn;t everything to you, and you want to retain some quality of life, you might want to pursue employment in Jeddah, Jubail, Al Kafji, Dammam or Riyadh (I may have left one or two off the list), instead of remote corners of the Kingdom.  Best of luck.

Is Jizan safe being so close to the Yemen border?

I have been here in Jazan Economic City for almost 3 months now and my colleagues(Filipinos, Indians, Japanese, Italians, British) and I are usually visiting Jazan/Jizan on weekends. Saudi armies are positioned in the border for almost a year already due to planned intrusion of Yemen rebels. Jazan City is far enough from the border and I am confident with Saudi army forces that will keep the Saudi territory safe. Nevertheless, you cannot feel that there is tension in the border. Everything is fine and safe to work with.
