college fees in UK

hi

I have an UK Ancestral visa and have worked/lived in the UK for the past 3years. I am bringing my children to the UK on dependentcy visas. I have been told that as they are already 16yrs old, they have to go to college and not school. Do they qualify for free state college educatuion until a certain age or will I need to pay for their college fees from the onset? Thanks!
