My personal view is civilians should not have guns, as much as most would not use it unnecessarily the chances of odd balls going berserk is too much. How do you filter who is stable enough to own one and who isn't? Even trained professionals seem to not know when/ how to use these sometimes.

Very simple - no-one can be trusted NOT to go 'nuts' under some conditions.

In a lot of 'western' countries there is far too much in the way of 'human rights' and other B S ! (IMHO)
This sort of thing tends to gets abused by the criminal elements of society. :(
In countries and cases like this, a lot of the time you NEED a gun, just to defend your family from the loonies.

HAPPILY it is much safer living in VN - Sai Gon anyway - and the 'average' person should never find the need to own, carry or use a gun. :D

IF - you feel the need to go "BANG - BANG" while in Sai Gon, take yourself out to the tourist site at the Cu Chi Tunnels, pay the Range Master out there and play with the available toys until your heart is content - or your wallet is empty !

Is that why all of these ladies keep asking me if I want to go boom boom?  Are they tour guides at Cu Chi?

US Army Cannon Crewman (M110 Howitzer) and  later a US Army Medic (9mm).  Might as well throw the 9mm at the target, because you'll stand a better chance of hitting it.

@TM, would that be a 11C or 11D. I was  a 88Z.

Here's a non-controversial aspect of this discussion.

Vietnamese students are trained on how to use an AK-47.  I was blown away (pun intended) when I saw my students assembling/disassembling them one day.

@TM, Vietnamese version of the USA ROTC.

I's mandatory.  The ROTC is voluntary, as you know. We didn't even have ROTC at my school, but I did have the misfortune of training Cad-idiots during my career.

Artillery: 13 Bang Bang.  Medic: 91 Bravo

On the civilian side I've been a Transportation and Logistical Specialist, aka a truck driver.  I worked in entertainment; the WWE, Broadway shows, etc.

OK - my military sort of goes - - ' CLANK - CLANK - CLANK ! I'm a bloody big tank ! BOOMMMMMM !  NEXT !
Also - "WHOPPIE ! An aircraft ! Lets go up and jump out of it ! "  :P
As well as a LOT of other things that came along.  ;)

You don't have to be crazy - but it helps ! :lol::lol:

Question - -  What's a 'civilian' ???  :/

Comparing your time in service and mine are the like a comparison between apples and oranges.

Civilians are the ones who spout off about wars, weapons and ways of dealing with a national threat without the experience to back up their arguments.  That's the  majority of the American public these days.  "Bomb 'em" is their answer to everything.

My country has devastated this country, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.  What has the result been?  Millions of dead civilians, which has brought forth hatred and resentment from a big part of the people we share this planet with.

The tyrant in Libya got what he deserved.  Too bad it was so quick.

The tyrant in Iraq got what he deserved, but the mission was sold on a lie, by a liar.

The Taliban and Bin Laden, who also died too quickly, wanted a fight and they got one, but it's been at a steep cost, in both financial and human terms.

US foreign policies have been the root cause of the majority of these conflicts and 9/11 was the chickens coming home to roost.  I'm afraid that it was just a prelude to something much worse.  This isn't a pretty world and America hasn't made it much better, IMHO.

P.S. I had to do an edit, because I thought you were a fellow "Marican.  You may know this already, but there's a bar in Vung Tau that's basically a tribute to the Australian soldiers who served here.  I spent a few hours there reading what the soldiers had written on the walls.

Lynyrd Skynyrd
summed it up best

Two feets they come a creepin'
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are layin' naked
Creeper think he got nothin' to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And as a man's reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes

(Chorus)
Mr.Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole

Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey
And playing poker on a losin' night
And pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkin'
Somebody been cheatin' and lyin'
So Big Jim commences to fightin'
I wouldn't tell you no lie
And Big Jim done pull his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes

(Chorus)

Oooh Saturday night special...
For twenty dollars you can buy yourself one too...

Oooh let me tell you all about it...

Well hand guns are made for killin'
They ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like to drink your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some ole fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me

(Chorus)

Ooooh it's a Saturday night special
And I'd like to tell you what you can do with it too...

Gun control laws work in Britain and Canada.  I'm going to assume they work in Vietnam as well, because I'm not the one who decides what's good or bad for Vietnam, nor what works and what doesn't work.  The Vietnamese do.

I've got to raise my hat to Teacher Mark, his last two posts are excellent.

I misread him when I first followed his posts and I sincerely apologise to him and the forum.

As for gun laws......?  Jaitch would have been shot well before now (or at least he should have been)

I apologize, as well.  I take an aggressive stance far too often. as was the case with you.  I extent my most sincere apologies.

Hello boys and girls! Looks like there have been some colorful discussions while I've been away. I'm the one who started the thread and happy to read the diverse feedback (to get folks to think and discuss). It's no doubt in my mind that gun control laws do work. I mean just look at the stats in Japan, Singapore,VN, Canada, and Aus....VERY LOW GUN CRIME.

Now back to watching the Summer Olympics...Go USA!!!:)

Ahh Death so many ways to kill someone- Chuck Norris can do it with his mind. Yes USA the Right to bare arms but nobody said anything about killing each other. girl you gotta a lot of time to worry about such things.
here you'll get the knife,club(bamboo-chair arm),plastic chair, rock, glass, helmet(new weapon-07)motorbike or even a trident prong(pig spit. All the good guns in the right hand, i just carry a pen or pen knife. What you use for protection back home where you live now? Steel toed boots?

-Do you mean 007, as in James Bond?
-(pig spit.....aren't you missing one of these ")"?
-Would be helpful if you used Capital Letters in the right places.

But since you were gracious enough to bring back my Thread back to life. I'll take the time to humor you.

"What you use for protection back home where you live now? Steel toed boots?"
