Hello everyone! We are just so excited about our upcoming adventure to Caulker Caye! The only damper is my husband has been reading some books, and all he seems to be reading about is the crime...is there a lot? Do we need some protection for ourselves?

From what I have experienced, most of the violent crime is in Belize City. In other places you might find some minor thefts, but no more than you would find anywhere else. Take the normal precautions about leaving valuables exposed (the same as you would in a mall parking lot) and you should have a good time. Overall, Belize is a safe place. I never feel threatened.

Robby's right on the money. I'm a single female, walk all over Cayo, and have never once had an incident. If you make it easy for them, they will steal what they can - so don't.

If by protection you mean a weapon, do not bring one into the country. They are illegal without a permit and you could go to jail - no joke!
