Hi gang,

I am looking to explore business opportunities in Myanmar.  However, the country still seems to be "closed", when it comes to telecommunications.  Have any of you ever been over there, or know anyone there?

I read the Factbook on Myanmar.  But, that is not enough.  I would really like to travel around there and meet people there.

Any lead would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Howie

They have an extra forum, is however very weak frequented

l3ully,

Yeah, I went on there and it seems like there is hardly anyone there.  I read that the telecommunication infrastructure there is still very underdeveloped.  It sucks.  That is why I really need foot on the ground.

l3ully

Yep, it's very poor. Consider, that there are not even 2 million mobile phones to. Each mobile needs to get licensed .... We are looking already 2 years into it, but due to TELCO conditions, we just can't.
With 2 offices in NT we holding 2 DSL and 3 3G lines as backup in cases of power or connection failures and for travel. Still to often, we stay offline
Also - business establishment seems to be quite tough to, 10 times + as in Vietnam next to unclear ownership's and residency.

Are you serious, man?  Even in this day and age?

I thought, in the late 90s, Vietnam was bad.  But, Myanmar sounds much worst now, is it not?  From my reading, everything is pretty much in its preliminary stage: a lot of promises, but no delivery, right?  Do you go over there as well, l3ully?

Before 'liberation', when the military dead heads were running the place, cell phones were usually seized/impounded at the point of entry.

You also HAD to buy Burmese money at the border at the 'bent' government rates.

Check these out. They are listed from reliable advice through Nervous Nellies (US) advice.

Don't even spend money on your trip until you have your visa. The visa on arrival was cancelled.

If you think CN is stiff, Burma is far worse. Have a NGO friend working in Yangon but he hasn't responded yet.

Check on www.TravelFish.org for the latest info.

Dengue fever is this years medical outbreak.

Leave that hat behind - bound to get you denied entry.

nope, as today, the newest publications showing around 1.4 million mobile phones, with a connection fee/licence of USD 1500 each and around 800'000 land lines, a rate should be about 12000 usd each. Internet connection even much less and heavy filtered at similar  monthly rates, like a connection fee/licence, with limited coverage. 3/4G is not at all available and so on

I bet, you want to have 3+ connections = No, you have to buy the phone there - and it's not included in the connection fee

Wild_1

l3ully,

Will an international phone, with international services, work there?

I also learned that the people are quite religious, are they not?  I mean they spend quite a big chunk of their days in prayers.

hey wild 1. i'm originally from myanmar but i moved to singapore when i was 7 and i just moved to vietnam recently.

I do have my relatives back there and my close uncle runs some sort of a tourism company back in myanmar so if u need more information about going to the country or need a guide about the country then do let me know.

With regards to doing business, from what i know, alot of companies are actually going into the country at the moment as they think that it seems to be opening up thanks to our Aung San Su Kyi fighting for democracy and all. But what i think is that the political stability is still not there you never know when the military will do some stupid shit. I'm thinking maybe another few years but you know there is always risk involved when ding business so if you decide to go in now, the cost and everything is freaking cheap and if everything goes well then there are alot of opportunities for growth.

Cheers!

Your VN cell carier will be able to tell you this.

Things are a little fluid in Burma these days now that 'Spring' has arrived.

I spoke to a Vietnamese friend earlier today and he told me that his Vietnamese phone, with the roaming thing, worked over there.  But he had to hide it, it was expensive, and it took place over a year ago.  He isn't too sure about now.

Wild_1

Dathancna,

Thanks for your response.  Yes, we are aware of the apparent risk.  It is why we need a good guide to help us with our assessment process.  We are as far removed from the typical fun-and-game of tourism as they come.  It will be really cool if you can hook us up with some knowledgable Burmese, who can show us the nuts-and-bolts of Burmese society.

Hey, if all go well, we can even collaborate on future undertakings.  Anyhow, if you are interested, feel free to PM me.

My friend and I are looking to bring children entertainment stuffs--joyrides, skating rings, 3D cinemas and etc.--to Myanmar, not snake oil.  No sir!

Cheers,
Howie
