safety/crime concerns

Post new topic

We have been planning a Belize move for 2 years now.  I am becoming very concerned, however, with the crime increase I am hearing about.  We are a female couple with a teenage daughter and a 10 year old son.  We have visited Belize several times and made friends with both expats and locals, but we are getting conflicting stories. Is it safe?  Am I bringing my children into a dangerous situation?  We had decided on Ambergris Caye, but am I walking into a disaster?  Should we cancel the move and look elsewhere?  I am asking for stories, suggestion, advice, etc. from both expats and locals.  Thanks!

I don't think anyone would deny that there has been some increase in property crime on Ambergris Caye in the past year.  We own a condo in a large resort with 24/7 security and have never been victimized, nor do we feel nervous or insecure here at all, but I know quite a few folks who have, most of who own or are renting private homes and do not have security guards.  Fences, burglar bars, noisy dogs, security systems, and caretakers all cut down on the chances that you'll be a crime victim if you do live in a private home.

I never feel nervous walking or biking around town or on the beach during the day or in the early evening, and I don't stay out late drinking.  A lot of the crime occurs in the wee hours. The usual common-sense cautions apply:  don't wear expensive jewelry, flash wads of cash, or flaunt wealth.

There has been an increase in police presence that I have noticed on the island, and I know that the mayor is working with the police department to try to improve the situation, but only you know what you are comfortable with.  Definitely come on down and visit first to see what you think.
