History: Kolkata formerly known as Calcutta was the capital of British India in the 18th century and where the British Empire grew wealthy. The colonial rulers built a huge number of imposing edifices and today the city boasts one of the world’s finest collection of British imperial architecture.  or BBD Bag is the area to explore the history of this city. It is best to walk around this area at leisure(3hours).
Present: Kolkata is now the capital city of the state of West Bengal. If you really want to travel alone in the city so the best and the cheap way would be using public transport. Public transport is provided by the Kolkata Suburban Railway, the Kolkata Metro, trams, and buses. The suburban rail network reaches the city's distant suburbs.
Where to shop in Kolkata?
New market is the oldest market in Kolkata which was set up by the British for the English to shop during christmas, here you will find everything and anything, check the massala patti or the spice market if you are planning to buy some good spice, you may also check the vegetable market which is close to this market here you will get goat meat, beaf, fish, pork.Ther is also a wine shop outside the Saurt Hogg market, you get all branded foreign liquors.
Where to find tailors and good restaurants?
Walk down Parkstreet and you will find some good tailor shops(approx.INR300 to stitch a pair of trousers),drop in to Flury’s to have some quick bites or walk into Bar-b-Q or Peter cat to have a good meal.
