Staying Safe in Cairo

Egypt is a wonderful country with a very much lower crime rate when compared to other nations but crime rates may increase and you should not ignore the associated risks.

Recently we used to hear and read about a rising number of reports of muggings, unwanted sexual advances and assaults.

We never ignore the possibility of unpredictable, sometimes violent, protests that can flare up in any part of the city at any time.

Regardless of the threat, it is very important that we all remember that attacks do not appear out of thin air. In fact, exactly the opposite is true. Don't drop your guard!

If we all follow some simple rules, we can often spot a dangerous situation as it unfolds and take appropriate steps to avoid it or prevent it.

Important: Be Aware

Take note of your surroundings and identify potential threats and dangerous situations.

Take responsibility for your own security.

Learn to trust your 'gut' or intuition and listen to it. Even if a situation does not ensue this does not mean there was not a possible threat.

On the Street

· Ensure a trusted friend knows where you will be, who you will be with and what time you plan to return. Your friend will be able to raise an alarm if you may be at risk.

· Plan your route and/or mode of transport and tell your trusted friend. You can then give an estimated time of arrival, allowing friends to track your progress.

· Do not wear headphones and listen to music when walking in the street. It leaves you 'tuned out'. You will be vulnerable to robbery and/or assault. You will also be unable to hear approaching traffic.

· If you suspect that someone may be following you as you exit a vehicle, remain in it or walk towards a well lit and populated area.

· When on the street, walk facing oncoming traffic. Keep bags on the opposite side to vehicles.

· Maintain a low profile. If people don't notice you immediately, they are more likely to move onto a more obvious target.

· Vary your schedule and route. Setting patterns people can predict leave you more vulnerable to attack, assault or robbery.

· Modify your fashion style. Be aware of cultural and religious sensibilities and sensitivities. High heels or flip flops are difficult to run in if attempting to escape. Clothing with long straps such as scarves and handbags can be used to catch and restrain you.

· For women: Short hemlines or low necklines may be interpreted as an invitation to make sexual advances.

· Stay off the street alone if you are upset or under the influence of alcohol. You are 'tuned out' and not fully aware of your surroundings.

· Avoid using ATMs at night or in unfamiliar surroundings. This lowers your risk of becoming a victim of a financially motivated attack.

· Carry your keys and/or your phone separately from cash. In a pocket and not a bag if possible.

· For men: Never assume that bag snatching only happens to women. Almost all of us now carry a laptop at some time for example.

· Memorise the phone number of your trusted friend in case of an incident and your phone is lost.

In a Vehicle

· Check in and around your vehicle before entering to make sure no one is hiding inside or nearby.

· Once inside your vehicle, lock doors and ensure that windows are rolled up at all times.

· Keep hand bags and purses on the floor and out of general view.

· If a suspicious person approaches your vehicle when you are approaching or stopped at a traffic light or junction, run the light if you feel threatened and if traffic flow allows you to do so.

· Check rear view mirrors regularly and take note of other vehicles. Try to note model and colours of cars and if they take the same turn offs and routes as you.

· If one or more vehicles regularly catch your attention , stay calm. Stay in well lit areas and go to a safe place.

· When driving someone home, ensure they are safely inside before driving away and make them do the same for you.

· If possible, park only in well-lit, heavily travelled areas.

· Try not to park next to vans or trucks, as you can be easily pulled inside.

· Check your surroundings before getting out of your car.

· In taxis - always sit in the rear seat if travelling alone and ensure that doors can be opened from the inside.

· In taxis - have an idea of the route you want to take and make the driver stick to it. Note the number of the vehicle.

Important: Remember

The initial phase of an assault or attack provides the best opportunities to escape. If you are in a public area, make as much noise and commotion as possible. This will draw the attention of passersby to your situation.

Take note of the route you are taking. Take note of street noises and distinctive sounds.

Be aware of the impact you are making on your surroundings be it by your dress, your behaviour or you perceived vulnerability.

Keep track of time and stay on the schedule you have shared with your trusted friend.

Be careful out there!

Be safe.

Instead of telling people to pay no attention to what has been said maybe you should count you're blessings that nothing has happened to you and I wish that nothing does. Please think carefully before telling others to ignore good advice.

This country has a huge problem concerning sexual harrassment and asaults (which have been on the increase since the Revolution). Women need to very aware of the situation and do what they can to lower the risk of harrassment or attack - the advice given is good advice and should be listened to.

While dressing in shorts, low cut tops etc may be acceptable in the resort areas to wear such things in the likes of Cairo is not and would attract more than the normal amount of unwanted attention.

I'm sorry but even modestly covered women get harrassed. You got nothing to lose if you be cautious, but you can have a lot to be sorry for if you ignore such valid advices.

biffy

OMG!!

WHat kind of person is this - sitting in another country telling people especially women to ignore very valid and good advice at this point in time in EGypt.

I for one would NEVER walk around Cairo in short skirts / shorts or strappy T-shirts - wearing 'normal' clothes that cover me up the harrassment is almost more than can be borne in some areas.

And as for the country being far safer than Europe - sorry - but I would not get this amount of unwanted attention anywhere in the west.  And if I did one good scream or a phone call to the police and the people would be dealt with very severely!

Please Ladies heed all the advice given and for heavens sake - do not listen to ill advised comments!  Especially from people who don't live with it every day.

LorriC

Well they do say that ignorance is bliss and maybe living in some kind of bubble where you can't see what's happening around you is a good place to be.

Personally I think I'll keep my skin covered in the hope that the number of sleazy remarks I suffer every day doesn't increase or escalate to something much worse.

nayeli0016

You don't have to make accusations like that. This is a 'forum' not a court hearing. We are all entitled to our opinions and sentiments.
Do not ignite negative conversations here. We are all trying to help each other out.

I still stand by my advice to everyone, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Well, im living here like 10 years, and i move alone as well in Cairo, in any time, Im working, go out, meet friends, go clubs, etc.. Im blond, not covered - i can say its really safe 95%. Im not wear short clothes and so on - due to my own, i dont want to be bothered.
Nowadays, due to crimes over Egypt became more, all of these advices are really usefool, and u will not loose if u follow simple rules to be safe. But for sure u should not be crazy afraid from everybody...most egyptian are very friendly and helpful. Honestly, my country (Russia), is much and much more criminal and danjurous then Egypt ever was and still.

Updates:

Crossing the Streets in Cairo

Crossing streets is probably the biggest challenge when it comes to staying safe in Cairo. Traffic lights, which only exist in a few locations, are routinely disregarded. In downtown Cairo, police officers may be controlling traffic at key intersections at busy times.

To cross the street, it’s like playing the video game “Frogger”, hurrying across the street one lane at a time, when there is a small break in traffic. One way to cross a street that proved to be effective is to find an Egyptian who wants to cross the street, place yourself next to him/her down traffic and shadow his/her moves.

Also, when riding in a taxi, the driver may go quite fast and drive erratically. If at any time you feel unsafe simply tell the driver to stop and get out.

Be Safe.

thx don moe for the post , as it reflects the situation this days , beside ur advises to be safe , i have to warn also about the distracting of attention by strange person ,occurs while you driving or walking ,you find a person or more suddenly warning you about thieves or fire and asking you to take another turn, acctually they try to distract u and ur attention , may be for making u turn to another way they want or- when u are driving -to steal anything they could from the car , thats a trick i want to warns about cause it commonly work with thifes , u may get a right warn from someone in the street depend on his look  but in all cases stay focus on pay ur attention

waL-83

another trick used by criminal persons when u are driving , they may use a child or woman or girl to make you stop asking for help never do that even it happens in night or at morning or in a public place, most of cases is a trick. and if u feel some one really need help leave it to the Egyptians if there is persons around , if not just use an Emergency call if u wanna help , but most of cases may be a trick , now days crimes related to robbery

waL-83

and every time i listen about an accident or warnings from my friends i tell about to the others and so on , this how everyday u be safe from random accident , and all about that ,taking too much care is a temporary situation in Egypt and it just like that , it will not happen every time you will be in the street , cause living in Egypt wasn't require the top safety tips , but now what changed is the kind of Assault not  totally the chances for it , so now the one have to be safe without disturbing his  or her day  and how to enjoy  the night .

Geely

Keep the windows of your car closed and the doors locked.

don moe

great job from all, posting new warning tips and updates :)

this is significant advice ,just wanna add take it into account in all cases , even when you are driving with high speed,or stuck in traffic jam , as the thieve depend on smashing the car window  ( i think they get tired cause all cars rolling up the car windows so they wanna solve this by smashing it with a stone for the purpose of distracting you and robber any item in the view )

so the main point is taking this advice into account in all care using  cases , and of course if u already parked it .

i was having a conversation with a friend working as an officer , he told me that most of offenders try to be away from the foreigners as they dont know what is the reaction and kinda may be cause they stand on how much police care for the safety for expats in egypt .

anyway stay safe

You actually freaked me out! :D I thought, it was about some dangerous parts of Latin America or Southern Africa. Well those safety instructions are needed when you are new to any country. But for sure, if you do not have difficulty in adapting yourself to local culture, you're gonna be safer.

Great post. Thanks indeed.

What’s up guys?

I know it is a quite old post, but I noticed that there are still some fresh posts going on. So I said why note to chair my experience maybe someone still interested.

First of all I wanna say, what an important and hot topic don moe “well done”.

I also wonna let you know guys that I have some strong back ground about S.D.  as I practiced real S.D. for the last 2 years. I also passed couple of official security trainings. With such background I can solidly offer any advice if needed.

Recently, one of my friends who knows my interest about such topic, had a seminar in her company about “women security” and “children abduction” with the following topics below. She mentioned that herself and most of her colleagues found it interesting. She passed the materials (2 pdf files) to me to have a look “if you need them please let me know how to post them”

1- Children abduction:
a- Introduction to child abduction.
i-  What should never/should be done (young children/ teen)
ii-  What you should be avoided/ be done by yourself to protect your precious ones.
b- How to talk to your little ones about it?
            i - Steps.
             ii- Role plays.

2- Women security:
a- Residential Security
b- Home Security While You Are Away
c- Personal Security While Traveling
d- Personal Security in Hotels
e- Carjacking
f- Surveillance
g- Sexual Assault Prevention

Finally, I wanna add some comments for you to keep in mind:

1- Keep in mind all the time that safety is your own responsibility (Yours/ your precious ones) as “don moe” mentioned previously.

2- Have a positive mindset “Self Confidence”, which will be developed by:
    - Believe in yourself.
    - Have the attitude of “never giving up”.
    - Be willing to make whatever necessary to survive.

3- Use “stimulus response training”
- If you have the space set some dynamic scenarios, and learn or create limited number of survival responses of your own to memorize (as you increase the no. your response time will increase which is not favorable).
- If there is no space use hands-on drills.

4- Use Visualization drills:
It is mental preparation by assuming the situation and your response. This will reduce anxiety, enhance the performance and tunes the nervous system and hence decrease the reaction time.

5- Faith Factor:
It will create a state of the mind that assists in controlling the heart rate when confronted with imminent danger.

Stay safe all.
