I went to the Honda showroom yesterday. a new Honda wave costs around USD900 incld registration.

I have not tried Suzuki as yet

I have to live in HCMC for a year. Paying USD900 for a basic bike seems a big amount for me as I am sure I will not get more than 300-400 when i sell it after a year.

Pls guide me:

(i) is there a certified second hand market for motorbikes in HCMC

(ii) Any idea about suzuki motorbikes. are they cheaper than honda

(iii) Any other hints on where i can get a good, preferably automoatic transmission, bike at around 400-500 usd

For that money you can get a second hand Yamaha nouvo :) Sell it in a year for more or less the same price.
Good bikes and plenty around to chose from. Take a look on Phan Dang Luu, lots of second hand dealers on that street.

thanks a ton for the quick reply. but my vietnamese colleagues tell me that most second hand dealers replace original parts. so as an expat with languague issues its very difficult to check these things, thats why i was looking for a reputed second hand company which sells with some kind of certification on the used bikes

You should be able to get a warranty if you buy from a dealer, but yes some of them have been known to swap out parts.
Alternatively you good check out the An Phu & Phu My hung neighbours on google groups. Quite often get expats selling bikes on there who are leaving the country.
Craigslist sells a few too, but I'm not a fan of that route.

here you go, this is the best place to look...

you should be able to get a decent honda wave for $200 to $350 second hand. Just make sure it comes with the blue registration card. Have a look at several bikes before you decide on one. The way to do this is hire a scoot for 3 days so you can drive around and look. Make sure you get your Vietnamese license which can be done by translating your foreign license. Also you will need to get the mandatory government insurance from a garage for about $5. That said if you spent $900 on a new wave you should be able to offload it for say $650 after a year so the net amount is the same and you get to ride a new bike. Also there is the possibility you stay longer than a year.

I used to buy many Vespas in HCM and ship to Cape Town South Africa. Can't remember the little shop in Vespa road and am looking for one for a mate in the UK now. Any advice would be good alternatively my driver Huong will remember Mike from Cape Town who used to buy many containers of patio furniture and antiques. Maybe some very kind person can call my driver and give him my details.
