Please, no misunderstandings here.

Lynnder is very, very houseproud and keeps a wonderful home, which she has turned into an art form.
However, she seems concerned about any cockroach issues in Malta.
Is there a problem?
This will not put us off but knowledge is power and being forewarned is to be forearmed so any advice would be very helpful.
I have to say that I have never experienced this problem in Malta previously and we have read this article:

(Which I have noted was written by a manager of a pest control company.)

Thanks.

All I've heard so far from neighbors and friends is that they'e more likely to be found in old houses/buildings, One of the reasons i'm in a brand new flat , cause i'm particularly scared of them. Hope this helps. two of my friend had this problem in summer , one couple moved cause nothing was working to get rid of them, second couple got some holes covered apperently they were coming from the grid beside garden and they said that that solved the problem.  Hope this helps

they are not so much a problem but as others have said they do exist and generally in older propertes and especially if there is old unoccupied or derelict properties next door....or unused garages or storage areas.

we lived in a nice place in the past and were riddled with them...also be aware they have flying ones here and theyre massive...usually about in the hotter months. the best sprays are baygon and pif paf....they really work - done ever step on one to kill it that just allows the eggs out......

Cockroaches, like rats, can be found everywhere.

First of all: yes, there are rats and cockroaches and other crawling insects in Malta, but it's not that tragically.

As said before, they like old and abandoned houses and garages ... unfortunately you can find old and abandoned houses and garages everywhere in Malta - and the crawlers do not respect the boundaries ;)

Supposedly because of this year's hot summer and lots of tourists producing heaps of rubbish the cockroaches have been a plague also in Sliema and St. Julians ... even the luxury hotels there had some problems.
Besides of chasing them in our house and the streets in our area, my wife and I were also confronted with them while sitting in nice restaurants ... and I can tell you: You will get used to it :D

In my opinion you're not primarily facing a "cockroach problem" here in Malta, but a "waste problem", esp. the food leftovers that attracts these ugly creatures.
The bugs already gone to sleep, but the waste remains.

the rubbish i see isnt necessarily left by tourists - in my experience the rubbish i see is generated by locals

Especially the food leftovers on the pavements for the straying cats: fish, meat, pasta incl. sugo etc.
First the cats come to eat, then the cockroaches and other bugs and at last the ants, woodlice and centipedes come to clean up.

I wouldn't blame the old properties for the cockroaches, but the people themselves ...

They're more of a problem if you live at street level.
