If you mean like the one below then it is St John's (The Knight) flag, flown around Eastertime.

Its called the Dannebrog, and the nordmans (people from the North, vikings but living in france), were in Malta, and then there is a lot of stories  about how the flag was given.
But Dannebrog is the oldest flag in the World.
When  I was a Child (way back) We were Always told that the Danebrog was given to the danes from God, coming down with the wind, from heaven, when needed

Sorry Anjette but the 'Dannebrog' is the flag of Denmark and although similar in its colours and outline they are completely two different flags.  The Danish National Flag has its 'cross' off-set with the centre closer to the flagpole. The one flown in Malta is the Knights of Malta (Order of St John) and is different in that the white cross is central.
