Looking to Retire in Belize

Post new topic

donnac

Hello all,

My name is Donna and my husband is John. We will be in Belize this July (2013) for a month while we check out the best area for us to retire which will be August 2014.

Any and all help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We were looking at the San Pedro area or Corozal but are open to suggestions.

Thank you all
Donna & John

Hi Donna,

I am from Beamsville, ON.  We have purchased property 2 years ago and have since built a home at Orchid Bay, Belize (Corozal District)  I have travelled back and forth appx 12 times in the last 2 years and hope to spend a few months there this fall/winter.  If you have any specific questions we can try to help you.  Elizabeth

Hi David,
Thanks for your note.  I didn't notice the date on the thread, but I did notice that Donna lives close to me in Canada and she is coming to my area (Corozal) July of this year.
Sincerely
Elizabeth

Hello Donna:

Excellent choice!  I'm in Consejo Shores and have been for approaching 6yrs now.  My husband has been here 13yrs and we have friends living in the community who have been here for as many as 30yrs to as little as 1 1/2yrs.  You will find that living on the mainland can be as much as 30%less expensive than living on Ambergris or Caulker.  Another consideration (assuming that you intend full time living) is storm season.  If and when hurricanes approach the Cayes, it's a good thing to remember that they are below sea level and if storms reach cat 2 or over, often times they are evacuated.  Everyone has their own particular search criteria.  I traveled Belize top to bottom and side to side before ultimately choosing this spot.  My observation was that while we see somewhere between 75-90inches of rain a year, to the south they often see 225 (or more)...next observation, more rain, more bugs. We have enough to share as it is in Consejo. Also, of course the next big consideration is proximity to Mexico.  Proper Wal-Mart and Sam's Club and a mall if you are feeling shopping deprived. Be happy to share experiences and offer any suggestions that you may want/need.If I can be of assistance, just give a cyber shout.

Best wishes for a safe journey

I have the same plans only for September.  I have found a place for rent in Corozal < $500 month for everything.  At my leisure  I will take the ferry to Ambergris spend a weekend probably at Perdo's hotel and find a place there that fits my budget. This may take a few months or longer.  I am thinking The Clositers $650 Month.  There are 2 online newspapers that have rentals San Pedro News and SP Daily.  Finally I have found quite a few good kindle Books on Belize on AMAZON.  The price is a few $ to around 10.  All informative in their own way.  The Lonely planet Belize Ebook is very good.
