I am an American now living in Malta with my Maltese wife. I am finding it extremely difficult to get a good job here in Malta. Is there anyone else here that feels the same way?

My background was in criminology, back in the US I was an active member of the swat team for nearly 11 years. When I approached the Maltese police commissioner about training his police force on tactics and responding to critical incidents, while showing his secretary a stack of certificates I have received , his very first comment was and I quote!  Do you speak Maltese? I explained that I do not speak Maltese I had just recently moved to Malta. His second comment to me was, if you don't speak Maltese I can't use you.

Considering the second language here is English I really did not expect that answer, at the end of the day I am the one with all the experience and all I wanted to do was share that experience and work with the police department to help increase their effectiveness. Back in the US I trained in things like barricaded gunman, active shooting in schools and shopping malls, hostage rescue, rapid response,  the list goes on. Sharing this kind of training information I feel is vital due to the way this day and age has become. Stay informed then you stay alive.

everyone who comes here to work to live here in Malta will find it difficult to find work - with the exception of those who are highly qualified and skilled in the fields of finance online gambling/gaming and IT skills. Then even if theyre lucky enough to find a job they usually find that they need two jobs as the wages are low and on average 4-5euros per hr, sometimes below minimum wages.

The requirement for speaking Maltese is a common one, and not restricted to the police force, almost all adverts dont mention it - some do but most dont - and the job seeker doesnt find out until he gets the interview (if hes lucky) - then they get hit with it.

I am also of the opinion that Malta has an enviable reputation for being a safe haven in terms of crime and in particular gun crime, most people can walk around at night quite safely here, maybe with the exception of a very few places. am not sure that the police here need or would see the need or indeed would want to have the knowledge or training for the tactics you clearly know a lot about. I do understand your thinking though and agree that forewarned is forearmed.

Good luck in your search

so you are handy with a gun comfortable with using one - do you have any armed forces experience...as i have some contacts

NB am not a mercenary and dont promote the use of guns - just asking a question in order to ascertain suitablity for a particular line of work

I am a retired SWAT officers, Glock and Colt armour, and did attend a 3 week firearms instructor course so I am very comfortable being around firearms
