Hi everyone,

How is life in Dubai? I heard it's extremely hot but what other difficulties are there? Is everything taught in Arabic or English in uni? I'm moving there next year, is there anything I need to beware of?

Life in Dubai is awsome. If u have lot of money to spend it will be AWWWWWSOME !!.

Yes summer here very difficult. But once you had the experience u can survive. RTA is providing public transports and most of them are air conditioned. Taxi as well. U have Metro if u want to cover long distance in short time. Very easy mode of transportation.

95% of people living here can speak english. So you can survive if you know english. Arabic is not at all nesessary unless you are not planning to stay in some country side of UAE. Language used for business as well as education is english. If you know arabic and hindhi you can have a good bargain in the street shops.

Yes, just like other places you should be aware of different types of scams. Lottery, Job offers, insurance, etc. If anybody is offering you something BIG which is not usual. Think three times. Dubai town is one of the safest place on planet earth you can live. Security and civil services are very good, so as the fines also. Be careful while crossing the roads other wise you will get fine starting from 200.

:) hope this will be helpful.

Thanks for your reply, its very helpful! How much are second hand cars in Dubai? Is it expensive to maintain?  I don't think I can survive the heat if I had to walk everywhere or catch public transports!

Life in Dubai can be from exciting to exhausting, much depends on the individual and his/her reason to be here.  In most cases, the Middle East life revolves around the employment for expatriates.  A steady job with reasonable amount of rest or day(s) off in the week can provide you the scope for a good life.  On the other hand there are thousands who really work very hard up to 60 hours in a week, barely have a few hours in the week to look after themselves, let alone have a social life.
Yes Dubai, like the entire Gulf group of countries, grown among desert, and climate will be hot, very hot during summer.  Still, compared to Saudi or some other places, UAE is a shade better.
You ask 'is everything taught in Arabic' - are you coming in as a student?  At school levels, Arabic is mandatory as a language to be learnt, and taught.  At college levels you can choose to study in either language Arabic or English.  That said, in UAE (specially in Dubai) mostly everything (like signs at public places) is written in both languages.  English is a very widely spoken as well as common commercial language.  Yet, the ability to speak or write Arabic will be a huge benefit for anyone who wishes to spend a good number of years here.  You can qualify for many jobs which are otherwise not available for non-Arabic capability.
If you have any specific query, you may please raise here or send a pm.

Cars are really cheap if you would like to get go around cars. Not the ash push 4 wheelers. A second hand saloon with avg 4 year old will cost you 25000 dhs to 40000 depends upon the milage and condition. For not so professional people its always better to get a professional consultation from a friend of you. Or directly go for used cars dealers. some of them are giving it with minimum warrenty and all.
