Hi all,

I am a Professional Creative Graphic Designer in Pakistan. I am Muslim. I am planning to move muscat. I am having an offer of 220OR as a packing boy with accommodation. But my plan is to find work as par time Graphic Designer for some months to get use to the areas & business. Then start my own design house. I have my own 2 years work Visa.

I need your professional Advise about,
1. How difficult is to get license for business of Design House?
2. How much expensive will be accommodation of 1 room with attach  bath?
3. Is it possible that I can find Part time job while I am working at some place?

Currently I am doing good business in Pakistan. [Moderated]

Regards,

Sumitran

Hi miansgroup,

(1) What exactly do you mean by "I have my own 2 years work Visa." ???

If you're referring to an Employment Visa, then you are supposed to work only for the company which has sponsored for your Visa. Absolutely for nobody else. Mind you it is a criminal offence to do otherwise.

(2) Any business requires a local Sponsor. No expatriate can own a business entirely on his / her own. For locals getting a new business license is not a complicated affair. But for an expatriate it is.

(3) 1 room with bath attached will be about R.O. 50/- to R.O. 75/- per month in a lower-middle class / middle-class neighbourhood.

(4) Working part-time is again an offence and is against the Labour Laws of the Sultanate of Oman. If you work part-time and get caught during the frequent raids done by the Ministry of Manpower officials, you will get imprisoned and after serving your prison term, you will get deported. So be warned.

I find the whole premise of your plan pretty incongruous.

Please speak with some of your countrymen already present in Oman for your specific and personal one-to-one guidance and advice. The route you’re planning to pursue is wrong.

Thanks For interest.

Actually I am getting visa from Pakistan. So I been told that you are free to work any where.

Secondly, I am a businessman so money is not the issue.

I just wanted to work in any firm only to know the advertising business there.

Hi miansgroup,

Seems like you've been grossly misinformed.

You cannot work wherever you please. You must necessarily work only for the sponsor who has sponsored your employment visa. No one else. And that's the law of the land.

I work for Advertising, besides the Publishing business, and I can tell you with a certain authority that with the government's 'Omanisation' drive in full force, getting new jobs for expatriates are getting dearer day-by-day.

But don't lose heart. Keep trying and you just might get a lucky break.

Good luck !

Dear Sumitran,

I was told that I am having an open VISA. In which I am free to work in any firm. I am not getting sponsor from any firm.

I am a business man as I said. So I need to check the market first then start my own design house with CTP.

Can you tell me the aprox. Salary of a Graphic Designer.

Fulltime & Part Time.

Regards,

Sumitran

Hi miansgroup,

Firstly, there is no such thing as an "Open Visa", with which one can work in any firm in the Sultanate.

Secondly, you cannot get an Employment Visa until and unless the company that has hired you sponsors for your visa.

And that will bind you to that company till you exit the country. You can of course re-enter the country on another company’s employment visa.

Working elsewhere part time is strictly prohibited by the local labour laws.

Needless to say, a Graphic Designer's salary would depend on the various factors such as the candidate's skill sets and talents, background and experience, past exposure and credentials.

There is no one-size-fits-all package.

Good luck.
