I was wondering if you folks have any information about using debit and credit cards in Ecuador. Will our existing US cards work? Will we need to get new cards?

How about starting a bank account in Ecuador, what would be required? Are there pro's and con's concerning the different banks? How about the regularity of businesses accepting the cards as payment?

I spent 12 days just recently in Ecuador and used my debit card without any trouble at all. I did however contact my bank before going to notify them that I would be overseas. They entered the info into their system so that overseas transactions would not be flagged . Terminal fees ranged from 50 cents to $2 with bank ATMs being the cheapest.
