Tipping

What is the recommended tipping rate for restaurants and hotels in Ecuador?

I leave about 5% if there is no service charge. None if there is a service charge.

That's a question that is gonna get everyone going. There is much debate about what is reasonable, or expected.
In some restaurants, they add the tip in, and it shows the % and the charge. Do not tip extra at those places. I never tipped over a dollar for any meal, but, I also don't go to any really expensive restaurants either.
You are not expected to tip taxi drivers. If one of them goes above and beyond the basic service, you might give em' a buck.
At the Marriot in Quito I gave the baggage guy a buck, but not really nessesary.
The bottom line is, we from the US have a tendancy to waaaay over tip. This kinda skews the whole economic structure, so it's best to reel it in a bit.
Make sure you have lots of dollar coins. They are the lifes blood of the traveler in Ecuador, and you'll run into the " I don't have change " syndrom over there. < they do >
Good Luck!

I generally tip 10% at restaurants if there is full-service involved.
