IT professional, got PR recently, need some info on adelaide

Post new topic

Hi All,

I'm new to this blog. Here is a brief introduction about me.
I'm Murali Murugesan (Indian - Tamil) currently working in Singapore as an IT professional (to be specific in JAVA/J2EE). I have 10 years of experience and recently got SA sponsored PR for me,my wife and my 2 months old daughter.

I would like to know the following about Adelaide before I make a move and I hope you people could help me out.

1. How about IT opportunities in Adelaide especially programming with JAVA? I see less than 10 jobs listed in any IT job search in internet for Adelaide, bit worried about that. Any reference or job sites would be of much help to me.

2. Where are the Indian community living there in Adelaide? Since I'm from Singapore and as you know Indians are all over the place here, just wanted to find a comfortable place there to begin with. Please don't think I'm biased, I'm bit concerned since I have to bring my family there.

3. How about the cost of living there? As a new immigrant what should be my cash balance to land there and secure a job?

4. Finally, is it possible to secure a job from Singapore before landing there in Adelaide?

Please help to throw some light to these questions, to help me arrive to a conclusion.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Murali,

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

stumpy

muralin.
You need to check on the australian immigration govt website to see if you qualify for a visa and if so what type.
This site will give you all the information about geting into Australia.
You cannot arrive here and start looking for work unless you have the correct visa.
Local people will get preference for work before someone from overseas so you will need specialist skills to get work.

Australia has a high tax rate and it is expensive to live here.
Try this website for cost of living www.numbeo.com

Hi stumpy,

Thanks for your suggestions. I already got Permanent Resident in Australia and I'm eligible to work there. I got that in this month and supposed to enter Australia before next January. So I have the above doubts/questions in migrating to Australia (Adelaide).

Thanks

Hi Murali

I came in from Chennai with my family eight months ago.  Hope my answers are of use to you:

1.IT opportunities - Based on availability etc.,  Most of these jobs are in Sydney / Melbourne / Brisbane. However, do visit job sites and interact with HR companies for updated info.

2.Indian community living in Adelaide - You are bound to meet Indians almost everywhere in Adelaide.  Good suburbs are Brooklyn Park, Mile End, Kuralatta Park, Norwood, etc.,  Since Adelaide is a small city, all suburbs are easily accessible to and from the city.

3. For a family of 5, I began with a weekly expenditure of $600/- including rent, food, travel, electricity etc.,  This is just a rough figure and will depend on each one's needs and lifestyle.

4. Is it possible to secure a job from Singapore before landing there in Adelaide - It all depends on demand and supply.

Hope these answers help.

Best wishes on your move.

Hi Mark,

Thanks a ton for valuable information. I'm coming down to Adelaide in August 2013. Hopefully I get the job puzzle solved at the earliest.

Thanks
