nurse coming to KAMC

Post new topic

ju redhair

Hi everyone,

I'm Joana and I'm portuguese.

I'm going to work as a nurse in Riyadh at KAMC, and I'm a little bit nervous about some stories have heard.

Some nurses say that the hospital takes our passports and that we don't have any freedom to go to the city or travel in our holidays.
They said to me that in there free time, because they are women, they can't get out of the facilities.

That we even need autorization to leave the country (Visa?) in an emergency situation at home, having a lot of troubles and that the all process takes at least 8 days.

Can someone tell me if it's true??

Yes, your employer will keep your passport and you need an authorization each time you leave the country (exit re-entry visa), but that applies to the majority of expats living in Saudi Arabia and not only for KAMC. Where I work, I get to keep my passport and it takes our HR department less than 10 minutes to issue an exit re-entry visa online, so 8 days long procedure is a questionable number.

As a single women working in a medical city, yes you will face some restrictions. You are not totally free to go out on your own; mainly you can leave the facilities on the daily scheduled buses going to town. Again that applies to many single women expiates in the country.

Now, the good news is that after sometime of you living here you will start creating your own circle of friends and you all can arrange to go out freely using taxis or private cars. Even going in trips to other cities in Saudi.

There is no daily head count so don’t get the impression that you will be in a jail or something like that. You are free to move around and visit town and go out (but I know that they have 12 Cinderella curfews in KAMC).

In conclusion, it’s not as bad as you are imagining, but at the same time you will not be totally free to move as if you were in Europe
