Hi all, my first time on th e forum in a few weeks, was very busy packing up and moving

Arrived in Malta on Friday , all went smoothly with the journey down (apart from struggling to find accomodation in Sicily on Thursday night, but that's another story)

Straightforward at port with the vet, move in good. So now just been settling in and finding where things are.

I'm in Mellieha if anyone else wants to meet up, would be good to meet some people offline 😊

Not started on formalities yet, all that to get moving this week , plenty I think with me, the car and the dogs ....

I have Internet anyway, my landlord knows a Melita installer so that was done within an hour of moving in!

Looking forward to being more active again now I've unpacked and starting to work out how life will be here

good luck Julia and welcome to malta and the forum

Hi socialwhirl

Great you got to Malta without any problems :) Would love to hear more about the trip ( and the problem with accommodation in Sicily also) & any paperwork involved, as we are facing the same trip - with our car and the dog :) Seems I've read an unbelievable amount of info here already, but the more - the better, especially when it's so current :D

Hi Tinna

I did get all my paperwork in order, if you go to the website email the vet people in Malta and they will send you the dog forms, fill them in on the word doc and send that back, had real trouble scanning as file too big fr their system. They then send you signed form back by email in a week or so. You need this for the port vet.

Obviously dogs need passports, and you need this before doing forms above as you need the number.

As far as travelling I got an early (7.50) euro tunnel, then drove about 6 hours through France, stayed in. Country farmhouse type accomodation ( dog friendly) just a little off the main road which I found on booking.com, I can send you details, they speak no English but we managed.

Then I drove to genoa the next day, arrived in loads of time, after relaxed start, I guess 6.5 hours driving, there are more hills, bends and tunnels on this leg. There is little to do at the port in genoa, there is an overhead walkway that takes you to a shopping centre, and toilets. The downside of arriving early and being one of the first on, is you are last off, take note, this Is very frustrating in Palermo when youa re still there over an hour after arrival.

The genoa ferry has dog cabins where the dog can be with you, but you can only take them on the outer deck not the rest of the boat. You also get kicked out two hours befor arrival at Palermo and have the choice of the outer deck or kennels ( didn't like look of those at all) we sat on the stairs :)

I found the ferry tedious and would consider driving through Italy to the bottom if I did it again. There wer quite a few dogs on the trip though.

Palermo traffic was quite busy coming out and it was dark, I had booked a farmhouse accommodation neare pozzallo than Palermo to be ready for the morning. It wa sin the middle of nowhere, yes beautiful if you were staying and had time to appreciate it, they were in bed when I finally arrived. Sat nav didn't pick it up hence driving in circles down country lanes. So I'd suggest find somewhere near the road!!
It took me four hours when I expected three, roads are not great, lots of tunnels, they funnily are good to drive though, speed is about 50-60mph though not motorway. And ferry arrived late then it took so long to disembark I hadn't factored all that in.

In the morning we had about half hour drive to pozzallo, note they say be there 1.5 hours before, that's generous, people arrived later and there was no problem, ferry only arrived close to departure time, so left later. Dogs have to stay in car on this bit, but it's a short hop and the cabin area is nice enough. You meet English peopl again too...

Then at port as you drive off the vet was there and just waved us to a place to wait, he had a couple of cars to deal with. He checks the paperwork, and the dogs microchip and that's it , sign a form and off you go. Our guy was very nice and very happy all the paperwork was done properly in advance. The exit is close to where you drive off so I would suggest if vet is not in sight you pull over somewhere.

That's it, you're here.

I did come over here 4 weeks ahead to find my accomodation, so I knew where I was going. So for me I just drove to the agents, then up here.

I booked my euro tunnel and ferries in advance, note they seem to go up as you get closer to date. And did a fair bit of reading around on here

Hope that helps 😊🌞

Thank you so much socialwhirl :)
We have the passport & injections sorted also. I got the permit emailed up to me with the tracking sheet, completed & e-mailed it back, but I am still awaiting a reply & to get it back signed, I even sent a follow up e-mail about it to make sure all is in order... I will e-mail them again , as getting a bit worried :|
We are taking a ferry from Ireland to France & driving all the way down through Italy. We are making it a bit of a holiday also, so will have 5 nightly stops also - only first 2 accomodations booked so far (pet friendly of course) - 1st just after Paris & the 2nd one in  Les Houches - France very close to Italian border and both close to the main road. Need to get another 3 organised this weekend :D
Thanks again!

quick work......

No problem. We are moving in 3 weeks and need to do the groundwork for our 2 dogs..

socialwhirl

:-)  Sorry, not been on this thread, but thanks KEmKem for doing that

Please note the petsmalta email they give you can be a bit unreliable/slow. When someone replied to one of my query emails, he gave me his address, which I used thereafter.

And they didnt acknowledge receipt of the forms, despite chasing,  they just sent the signed ones a little over  a week later I think it was.

as i mentioned before don't print, fill in and scan the forms, they come out too big and bounce. Complete it within the word doc sent, doesn't need a signature so its fine.

Just a side note though...... the info is available on Google, does nobody use that when they need stuff?? I originally found it form a Google search, as I assume KemKem has done as well.
