If we're here to help others, does that mean we're all enablers?

MO2013

Hi HaileyinHongKong,

As we are here to help each other by many forms (explanations, advises, sharing experiences,….etc,) but at the same time each one still has to do his job so the answer to your question is “No” we are not Enablers we are called Helpers.

- There is a tinny line between helping someone and enabling their actions, and it is often hard to be detected. For anyone who does not know, both Helping and Enabling are defined as follows:
a- Helping is doing/guiding/advising/tipping something for someone who are not capable of doing the thing completely  or in some cases do not know about it or in other cases do not know how down do it unless you point.  But they are still welling to do the thing or will do the thing once they get the help.

b- Enabling is completely doing for someone things that they could, and should be doing themselves. In different words, Enabling means putting the needs of others before your own.

- From human behavior point of view Helping is classified as a straight/regular/healthy behavior, while, Enabling is classified as dysfunctional psychological behaviors where the Enabler feels overly responsible for others.

- Generally, Enabling has negative results for both the enabler and the enabled. The enabled person always continues the negative behavior, and may worsen such behavior, since his needs are still being fulfilled by the Enabler. As a result, this makes the enabled person dependent, which often leads to resentment.

- The clearest example for a negative Enabling is the case of addiction in a family, then, Enabling actions may include the following: Ignoring the problems caused by the addict - Making excuses for the behavior of the addict - Trying to soften the consequences of bad behaviors - Pay the bills for the person being enabled - Cleaning up any messes (literal and figurative) for the person being enabled - Believing the lies of the Enabled person.

- For some minor cases Enabling is positive. The most well-known example are the parents, they enable the children to help them to develop and grow. They spend long time listening to them, explaining, correct, try to take role in making their decisions. This kind of positive Enabling is often termed as empowerment or creating a new authority.

I hope that my post answers your question.
Cheers,
MO.

Sometimes,I am in the same your sitiuation. asking myself what's the purpose of living, what's the meaning of life.
When I look back I just see I'm not strong and patient enough to find out the answer my question. Because it's a very hudge and large question for self-asking.
If someone ask me about that, I'll have chances to answer them in another context. The special thing here is sefl-thinking and answering others's question are not same. Because being asked offten motivates your feelings a bit to think with larger trend.
From my view, I think purpose of living is enjoying and sharing. Enjoying helps to feel about life with happiness, strange, fun and other nice things. Sharing is to combine and understand. It also brings hapinesses and lot of fun...
However, I think, sharing offten contains enjoying, but enjoying is not offten to consist of sharing. because sharing consist of both fun and sadness. Life is moving so much! Not just having happiness and some simple factors, so it needs sharing and interact among people.
The first important Purpose of living is for self.
cheers,

Self and if a parent for your children too

I think I'm with Plato on this one.
He argued, The man who makes everything that leads to happiness depends upon himself, and not upon other men, has adopted the very best plan for living happily. This is the man of moderation, the man of manly character and of wisdom.

Given we have sod all chance of actually ever finding out why we were put on this little blue ball, destined to ride it like no more than a flea on a dog's back for four score and ten years, we may as well have a bit of fun while we have the chance.

If any of the major religions have it on the head, we'll find out when we snuff it.
