I do not know him but he is a hero.

You should get a boat AP.  One with a motor so you can go putzing around during the next flood and be the great big fat American Hero...it'll look good for our image aboard.

Another good one from THD, no religion or politics but it will be closed soon...

Now a funny story from when I was 19 years old. I was stationed in Heilbronn Germany. Been out camping and protecting the free world for 3 weeks. Returned to garrison and went with my friend to his house. His wife was at work, no beer in the house, he told me to hit the shower, he was going for beer. There I was, in the shower, enjoying the hot water when his wife arrived home. Yeah, she thought her husband was home and proceeded to surprise him in the shower just seconds before her husband returned home with the beer.

Oh oh,the above post needs PC censoring for reasons of-
References to soldiering or aspects of military training.
Assumed nudity.
Presumption of infidelity.
Promotion of alcohol beverages.
Exhibiting middle class privilege by using heated water for bathing.

Perhaps I missed it, but I did not see anywhere in the Terms of Service where religion and Politics cannot be discussed. Granted discussing Vietnamese Politics is probably not a good idea.

It was a post from Julien a while back.  I remember it went something like this:

Hi Guys, okay there's something wrong here.  Two things we don't discuss on Expat-Blog and that's Religion and Politics.

ChrisFox

When you're American there are very few topics that aren't politically charged.  Even correct spelling and arithmetic imply liberal elitism to the 18%.  This has gotten considerably worse since, oh, 1981.

Which ideology politicizes minutiae of everyday life is left unmentioned save to note that it made considerable tragic history in the 30s and 40s.

Then perhaps he should put it in his TOS (it might be there and I just didn't see it) or at least a sticky at the top of the forum. Is one expected to read every post to find out the rules?

ChrisFox

It's obligatory netiquette to read Sticky threads announcing the rules of decorum.  Not that there are going to be a lot of surprises there.  Be scrupulously civil to one another, eschew controversy, etc. etc. etc.

I consider myself a good math-er and speller, but I am NOT liberal and, hahaha, not elite either.

I'm more a Socialist than a liberal; contemporary liberalism includes some radically egalitarian ideas that I find forced and extreme and I can't go along with.  But on the other side there is a cult of ignorance and pride in being what people at one time called "common."

In the fifth grade I was eliminated from a spelling bee for leaving the D out of "handkerchief."  It still burns, half a century later.

Tran Hung Dao

This was an interesting read today.  Got me thinking about the dual citizenship thing (there's another thread about getting a birth certificate in order to pursue a dual citizenship) but since it has the potential to "go off-topic", I'm gonna post here.

http://tuoitrenews.vn/society/15402/vie … ing-police

Anyhow, this American really screwed it up.  It says here he's Vietnamese-American but doesn't say he's if he's a dual citizen or not.  Somewhere, I remember other Expats say if he's a dual citizen, then basically the US Embassy will not help this guy because he would also be a Vietnamese Citizen.  So there's seems to be an advantage to being a citizen of a shut-up-or-I'll-drone-strike-you nation after all.

Wild_1, are you reading this?  Care to share the pros and cons of dual citizenship?

Wild_1

Why, so idiots such as him can run-amuck?  His kind, and a few other, can rot in hell for all that care.

I agree.  But wasn't it you that said something about the dual citizenship thing?  I know TC0088 is looking into dual citizenship since I know two pros of it is that you don't have to worry about visas anymore and you can own "rent land for 50 years" but what's a con?  Would the Canadian embassy be of any help in the event he got in legal trouble?

Care to explain what nerve this twanged?

My partner is dual.  It's going to cost a lot to transfer the proxy land to his name.

khanh44

Canadian embassy don't do anything for their own citizen dual or not.

I remember way back a Vietnamese lady with Canadian citizenship got caught with crack or something at Tan Son Nhat airport in her suitcase. It seemed like someone put it in there without her knowledge and she was just the carrier.

Well she got executed by firing squad and it set a precedent afterwards for all travelers to always keep their eyeballs on their suitcase 24/7 citizen or not.

Wild_1

THD,

TC0088 contacted me last week, and I gave him the full rundown on what he needed to do, among others.

As for assistance from the embassy, on political issues, yes.  But when it comes to civil, such as the one that clown is facing, the embassy's hands are tied as well:  how do you defend such hideous acts?

ChrisFox wrote:

I am not too sure who told you guys that, and for what reasons.  But, I bought my lands and never had to pay, nor do, anything extra.

Khanh wrote:

Yup.  When Number One wants you, he will get you.  If you allow things to get that far, particularly in Socialist Vietnam, no one can save you.

Anatta

Howie,
Thanks for the email urging me to check back, since you guys are talking about me behind my back :o, so I thought I'd check in for a few moments.

Good to see that you and Budman (and his dang No Topic thread) still around (as well as other old timers).

Wild_1 wrote:

So it meant that you did not pay anything at all for your lands? I did not know you pay anything to begin with, so you should have written instead:

I bought my lands and never had to pay, nor do, anything extra.

Wild_1

Anatta,

Julien thinks that you are a girl.   Don't ask me why!  I just wanted to see you explain it to him.  :idontagree:

As for Budman and I, along with Saigonmonkey, we are pretty well dug in.  We are not going anywhere, anytime soon.

Finally, in order for me to acquire things without having to pay, or do, anything...  I would love to be able to do that.  However, I must join the Party first.  Any lead?  :D

Julien

Don't ask me why!

that's probably due to fever - I just got back to Europe a few days ago, it's freezing here, and of course I got sick :P

Anatta

It is Ok, Julien. Howie with his devious mind just wants to play divide-and-conquer. We still love ya.

Hey, if this is what it takes to drive traffic up, I'll take one for the team.
Who prefer to converse with a monkey in dreadlock and a menace-looking naked dude instead of classy ladies and Bud-drinking babes in bikini?

The monkey in dreadlocks was preferred over YOUR recommendation of a monkey with Paul Stanley makeup. Nothing against KISS (loved 'em when I was about 14), but the makeup thing is just not my style.:P

Saigonmonkey,
I don't want to reveal too much, but you are forcing my hand.
Paid members of the site will have the monkey in KISS make up, Howie fully dressed without the shades and hat, other contents are still being negotiated... ;)

Budman1

Welcome back Anatta. The tollboothgods have really missed ya....

You do not want to see, my friend.  Believe me!

Anatta

Budman
Good to see you (and the babes) are still around.
Have not had much time to participate, so actually just stick in shortly to say hello to the good old timers. Will try to be more active later on, when I have better chance.

No credit for me, mon!  Lots of  to you for sporting it though.  Better than what Anatta has, for sure!

Given that I've actually met Anatta, I wish he WAS the person shown in his avatar. Would've given me something to look at when your Trojans were stinking up the game that day. When's the last time they beat Stanford, anyway? Oh YEAHHHHH... Just last weekend!:joking:

Anatta

Very funny, Saigonmonkey.
Teaming up with Howie to beat on me.

Last weekend? Nope, last weekend we beat Cal 63- 13. Not that Cal is much to boast about, but a lopsided win is a lopsided win, especially against a erstwhile rival .

For Howie and his hapless team, I have an appropriate term for it "chó ngáp phải ruồi", in short terms "Dumb Luck".
