Why does my internet suck so bad? >:(

Nam_

I moved into this new place a couple of weeks back and had to get the internet hooked up so had the landlord arrange it for me.

The company has a website at sst dot com dot vn. I paid 700k for the installation and modem and I'm told the bill will be around 350k per month.

The guy told me it was unlimited and the first couple of days it was really fast but has gotten really bad since then. Oftentimes I cannot even get simple pages to load (such as this one) without trying several times (takes a long time and often quits trying to load the page or I get the "this page can't be displayed" error message).

I did download several movies from kickasstorrents and have watched quite a few youtube vids so I'm sure I've sucked up quite a bit of bandwith...so maybe that's the problem (the weird thing is downloading still seems to work reasonably well, it takes 2 or 3 hours to download a movie but they all download just fine)?

Maybe I should have asked about different rate plans based on anticipated usage?

I hope I can get this fixed somehow with this company and don't have to get a different service. When I'm not messing around downloading movies and watching Learn Vietnamese with Annie videos on youtube I have real work to do (right now I can't even make Skype calls to the U.S. because of the poor connection) so need to get this fixed asap.

Anyways I thought I'd ask here if anybody knows about this company and about their rate plans (everything on their website is of course in Vietnamese and I don't understand) and whether or not I need to get a different service.

Cam on!

My dell with windows 8 was slow and at tmes would not connect.  Bought a Samsung tablet and have no problems.

Just call to the service company and ask them to fix. You description what would you like to complaint then they will fix for you.
Or beter call to the landlord to get help

Hi, sounds familiar, I send e mail to a friend  in HCMc and think that some times they dont get through in your experience is this true

You get what you pay for, and that's not gonna be much for only 350k/month.

The only way I have ever been happy with my internet here (and happy is a relative term, by the way) was to upgrade it to the best ADSL I could get, which costs 1,980,000 VND/month. That gets me decent speed, but it's still not reliable. In some areas you can get a fiber-optic connection with even faster speed than I have, for less money, but due to the inconsistent infrastructure here (have you seen the maze of wires strung through the trees all along the streets?), even fiber-optic is not that reliable.

So that's really all you can do - pay to upgrade to as much as you're willing to pay for, and hope for the best.

$100 a month seems like a lot of money. Ring your landlord. You may have other people stealing your net too.

Not if you want decent internet in Vietnam. Folks, Vietnam does not have the refined infrastructure of a modern Western country. You're simply not going to get the same quality for cost that you get in Western countries. Everyone please quit complaining about how much your 350,000VND/month internet sucks - OF COURSE IT SUCKS!

My landlord has nothing to do with it. She signed over authority to me to make any changes I want regarding my internet service.

The amount I pay is a flat rate, regardless of usage. So even if there is someone stealing my net, (there's not) it'll still cost the same.

I guess I'm lucky. I have VNPT's MEGAVN service and it runs me 350,000VND a month. It's fairly fast but because of where I live they had to run the wire from the server to my house and I lose the connection every once in awhile for a short period of time. I just plug in my 3G stick from Mobifone till it comes back.

I thought I was replying to Nam_ not saigonmonkey. $100 does seem a lot of money for net. Nam_ just asked a question about his net this is what this site is for. I know after you use so many gig your net can go to a lower download speed.

^No worries BIGJED. I addressed you because I was the one saying I paid almost $100, to which you commented. Nam said nothing about that. Therefore, I thought you were commenting to me. It's information all the same, anyway, for everyone to read.

It was a good dummy spit. I couldn't work out why your landlord had anything to do with Nam_ landlord. All good.
