Hi, All

I am planning to find up a job in Malta earning about 2000 euros as an IT consultant. I got fed up with the terrible winters we were having. I am a family man. The plan is the following ...

(1) Get a job while in the UK. Come out here. Settle my self in the job assuming that I get all the ID cards, SSecurity, etc. etc.

(2) Confirm my probabtion period - probably 3 months. Then in the 4th month - make a trip home - to check up on my family.

(3) Hoping to send atleast 1000 euros home. The rest should cover my rent
350
my electricity utils
130
is that ENOUGH - would I need airconditioning because of July
August ? I have been told that ELECTRICITY prices are high
I heard that Nov, Dec & Jan can be freezing inside your home.
So I am wondering whether I should double my amount/per month
for electricity

my food
160
my travel
30
social security+taxes
6000/12 = 500
Okay that comes to 1170 euros
So, that means I need a salary of
1000 + 1170 = 2170
plus another 100 euros just to cover my flights home
2300 should be my gross salary
Atleast so that I can save up 300 euros after expenses to pay for a return flight back home.

Is that realistc or am I stuffed ?

(4) Will I be lonely - I guess that I can only work out once I come there

(5) Will I miss my family - I guess if I can make those trips home over a long weekend then I am okay

(6) Generally would I get a total of atleast 25 days leave ?

The reason why I chose Malta (1) since I am an EU citizen (2) it is cheaper to travel back to the UK and probably more often than say Dubai (3) would be entitled for medical (4) Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar atleast would be sunny

I have some unresolved questions

(1) Would my studio be furnished ? Would it be safe ? Does one have noise issues in Malta considering it so crowded

(2) What are notice periods like ?

(3) Can your employer hold your salary ?

(4) What happens if you get a summary sacking ?

(5) Our rent contracts DRACONIAN ? like is it easy to change ?
Can you loose your deposit ? Reading thru posts here - it looks like RENTING can be a nightmare !

(6) How easy is to suddenly find that there is not much to see in this Island since it's so small ?

(7) How SAFE & EASY is it to make friends, cycle & play table tennis etc. etc.

And oh!

Health Insurance
=================
Do I need MEDICAL INSURANCE

or can I use my UK European Health Card ??

i.e if I start working - since I would be paying Social Security would I be entitled to Maltese health care ?

Would I still have to make NI contributions here in the UK ?

If someone look thru my plan - and point out areas which need sorting I would be grateful

Sorry to be blunt but.........................

Quote '(1) Get a job while in the UK. Come out here. Settle my self in the job assuming that I get all the ID cards, SSecurity, etc. etc.' - Difficult

Cycle? Dangerous.

Health Card? As tourist only.

How old are you?

Your plan seems poorly constructed.
You also ask questions that cannot be answered by others, only yourself and after the event.

The impression I get is that you have done very little research.

I suggest you have a GOOD look around here, especially through other topic headings; to be found at the top of the page of Malta Forum; here: https://www.expat.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=341

Then perhaps, I think you should start by visiting the islands and talking to people, especially to find work.

Good luck.

ricky

Hi hcpa,

welcome to the forum.

(1) is already very unlikely to happen.

What exactly do you mean when you talk about IT consultant? Qualified and experienced programmers are in high demand here in the i-gaming and internet sector.

Is that what you mean?

Cheers

(2) The standard probation period is 6 months. But you are entitled to annual leave of 2 days per month (for full-timers) which you can still take during your probation period.

3) seems ok-ish but it depends on the person.

(4) Depends on how much you will go out and spend eh.

(6) 24 days annual leave, 20 fully paid sick leave, 20 days half paid sick leave + any public holidays, for full time jobs.

---------------
(1) Would my studio be furnished ? Would it be safe ? Does one have noise issues in Malta considering it so crowded
I think pretty much all? flats are rented furnished. Safe? Depends on you and the area and the neighbours I guess.. Malta is generally safe I think. Noise issues again depend on your neighbours. Not to mention some noise is unavoidable if you live in a block of flats isn't it.

(2) Notice period: first month - none,
(a) for more than one month but not
more than six months .................... one week;
(b) for more than six months but not
more than two years ...................... two weeks;
(c) for more than two years but not
more than four years ..................... four weeks;
(d) for more than four years but not
more than seven years ................... eight weeks;
(e) for more than seven years, an additional 1 week for
every subsequent year of service up to a maximum of
twelve weeks;

(3) Can your employer hold your salary ? No

(4) What happens if you get a summary sacking ? Not really sure..what does usually happen in UK?

(5) Depends on who you manage to find. Need to be picky..

(6) Depends on what you like to do..

(7) How SAFE & EASY is it to make friends, cycle & play table tennis etc. etc. Well I think it's pretty easy to ride a bike and play table tennis, although not sure how safe table tennis is :)
Cycling definitely isn't in Malta.

i.e if I start working - since I would be paying Social Security would I be entitled to Maltese health care ? yes definitely

Would I still have to make NI contributions here in the UK ? no clue. see other posts?

scubaboy

No NI contributions are needed in the UK

Although a lot of the above is true and pertinent I have also know a lot of people that get jobs and then move... safest way really ..... worked for me in the IT sector.

nikhil uttwal

Hii,all

I m studied from Delhi university in India..i am a student of journalism..after my degree complete can I try to apply the job in aliens Malta media...its possible or not

ricky

Hi nikhil uttwal,

welcome to the forum.

There is no 'aliens Malta media'. Just about all journalism jobs in Malta require Maltese and good English skills.

I'm sorry to say your English is not that good.

Cheers

You try to help people, publicly and privately and they just don't even bother to check back. hcpa, take note, it's called manners.

nikhil uttwal

Sir.

.    if I improve my English skills..than I can try to job of journalist in sliema malta..if its possible than how I'll get the work permit in sliema malta

ricky

Hi nikhil uttwal,

it is not really just about English. Without speaking Maltese and being networked in the Maltese political scene and being a TCN you can just as well forget trying to find a job in journalism in Malta.

You really have to work on your English and learn Maltese and find an employee willing to apply for a work permit on your behalf.

Half the newspapers in Malta publish in Maltese and belong to political parties and the other half publish in English but you still need Maltese language proficiency.

What makes Malta so interesting for you ?

Cheers
Ricky

nikhil uttwal

Hiii..

.      sir how I get the work permit of sliema Malta..

ricky

Hi nikhil,

you cannot get a work permit yourself .

You will have to find a job that qualifies for an employer to apply for a work permit for you because he cannot find anybody within the European Union to do the job!

It is quite a difficult process.

What makes you think that you can qualify as a journalist in Malta ? That is what you will be asked to show.

Cheers

Hi there

I hope you do not mind me contacting you but my husband daughter and i are moving to malta in october as i have a job offer.  He works in computer forensics here in the uk for the police and is looking for IT work on the island, if you have any contacts i would be grateful or any advice he has obviously joined agencies etc but we are hoping to secure something before the move,

Kindest regards

Laura

ricky

Hi Laura,

welcome to the forum.

Usually you have to be on the island but if you are going for a highly qualified job you might be able to secure a job before you actually arrive.

Go though the established job agencies and send them your cv. That's about all you can do.

Cheers
Ricky

lauralane78

Hi thats great thank you for your advice we did think it may be easier to secure a job once here i know there are quite a few IT jobs especially in the i gaming

Kind regards

Laura

hcpa

Thanks Myrkur for your helpful advice. From the sounds of it looks like it really depends on how much the job I get has to offer. Unlike, contracting in Northern Europe where admitedly rates are higher - there is a possiblity of getting home atleast once in 2 weeks. Thanks again.

I just trawled the net. Looking for jobs in locations like Malta, Gibraltar, Portugal, Cyprus, Spain. Mainly, via google.

Computer Forensics sound like a very niche field. Your husband might have to try and approach Maltese Police directly. I am sure with the amount of banking, gambling and other finance sites emanating from this island - there is definitely a need for this role.

ricky

Hi hcpa,

long time , no see ! -))

I'm still awake because of noise issues in our appartment! Some tourists or language students having a party nearby but can't exactly locate the source of the loud music ! It's 1 am in the morning.

Am trying to get the police to come around and check !

So much for the noise issue !

Cheers

I hope you get that noise issue sorted. Is this occurring within your building premises ? I am assuming here that police are not so dismissive of these issues - the fact that you have decided to call them @ this late hour.

Assuming that you are a working person - how often does this happen ? Can understand once in 6 months but, maybe during the summer it is asking too much after all the island must be packed with revellers. It would be a good idea if this forum could provide a list of reliable agencies that provide properties that are vetted for issues like noise, clean water tanks & electricity/gas ?? (is that there) ? Looks from what is said in the forum - it is pretty hit and miss despite all the precautions one could take like visiting the property etc.

Hmmm ..... so renting in Bugibba is probably not a good idea because that is one of the touristy type areas.

Toon

got it in one..and no there arent any or many that I would recommend - well not yet anyway

Which are the areas that are devoted towards business, understandably Sliema & Valetta are one of those areas - so which areas would be suitable for renting i.e. where mostly tenants are who are going to work ?

I am Glad Ricky used the word Usually....

I got a Job via Telephone, Sky[pe interview and then had to travel to the Island twice, I would suggest he copntact some of the Bigger IT Companies, Crimsonwing, 6pm, etc. you will be able to google these and then send them your CV and followup withj a telephone call a few days later.

Also if someone can give me a ball park figure of how much salary per month one would need to have in order to go back say once every month to the UK on a weekend - assuming that saturday and sunday are both holidaysGiven the natural expenses like rent, food, water and electricity bills, travel to work
