Postal service?

Post new topic

irishmom

Hi, I am a newbie to Riyadh, arrived two weeks ago with my three children to join my husband. I am a bit stumped with the postal system. My son's birthday is in two weeks and my family want to send cards. Where/ how do I receive post?? The compound that we are in does not accept post for residents. Do I get it sent to my husbands work? Is regular post ok or do I need to get them to courier birthday cards?,! And how do I post stuff home? I haven't seen anything resembling a post office. I've been asking my hubbie to try to find out from workmates but it's obviously not on his priority list as he keeps forgetting! And I have asked a couple of people in the compound but they  just get important documents couriered and don't receive regular post.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to help me out :)

Here's a thread you will find useful:

Also, I would advise you have mail sent to your hubby's place of work.  A couple years ago I was on holiday in Greece and I sent two postcards, one to the US and one to my colleagues in Riyadh.  The US postcard arrived in ten days; the Riyadh one in 6 weeks (could have been an anomaly, I don't know).

Welcome to the Kingdom! :D

Thank Alliecat. Will ask mum to try sending something to hubby's work and see how it goes :)

Hi Irishmom
I live in Meath and am moving to Riyadh with my 2 kids to join my husband in a month.  How are you getting on? I would love to e-mail you for some tips!! If I can let me know:)

If you get post sent to your husbands workplace, ensure it's got the PO Box number on it.  It will end up at the postal sorting office and a driver will regularly pick up mail from there.  Mail takes at least a month to arrive.

Hi algough, I am here two weeks now with three children. My daughter is 9 and my boys are 7 and 4. I have sent you a contact request on here and will message you my email address once that's sorted. Anything you want to know, ask. I probably won't be able to answer but I'll do my best :). By the way-it's much better here than I expected it to be, if that helps!

Thank you beakersful, sorted out the birthday cards as we have belongings being shipped this week, so they've gone in there but will have to figure something out longer term!

How exactly do people receive post?  I am thinking of relocating from the UK and a lot of my letters will be sent on to me (Riyadh).

Am I at risk of late/ non arrival of such letters?

How about sending letters (ordinary mail) from Riyadh?  There seems to be a worrying lack of post offices in the Kingdom!

I got my mother to send a letter by regular post to try out the postal system. It took six weeks. Had to send it to my husbands work because the compound won't accept post. We have had our post at home redirected to my mothers house and she will send it by courier once a month. I have been here for two months now and I have seen one post office!!!

Happy to here that some people still using the classic way of sending their thoughts to their love one with much more hardship and perseverance than making an Email ;).
Anyway Irishmom, 1st let me welcome you to EB hoping to see more of your post. Speaking of post, yes ever since theres only few post office in riyadh, usually we go BATA (market place). While I'm working in riyadh the company address is what we are using as our home address cause they are much well known and easy to find as long as you have he right zip code.I guess your husband company has way of sending letters too, like a courier. Until now sending post really take time sometimes depend how far will it go even if you make it special delivery. goodluck!!! :)
