Migrating to KL.. Need some basic info

Post new topic

Hi,
I am in talks with an employer in KL with regard to my job, and currently we are in the stage of salary negotiation. I am being offered 11k RM, although I am demanding for at least 12K. Going through the various posts in this forum, I am sure this should be sufficient, if not for a luxurious life, for a family of 3.
Now, my queries:
1. My son is now 2.5 yrs old. I will have to put him in school soon, so how much do I need to expect to spend on the same?
2. I don't drive. How good is the local transportation in KL? Can I manage with buses/metro trains alone? My work place, if everything goes well, will be in Kota Damansara.
3. This one is on behalf of my wife. How easy or difficult is it to buy Indian spices and other food stuff there? We are strict vegetarians.. Also, I think there are good Indian vegetarian restaurants in KL, right?

Please let me know.. Will revert back with any further queries.

hi dropath,

12k should be good enough. ur big expenses will 3k for accomodation, 2k for taxes and another 2k for schooling.

1. there is a good school called elc international school in sungai buloh (very close to kota damansara). google it and u will find the website where fees are given.

2. trains r good but not so much the buses. i would advise u to get a cheap second hand car. but its ur choice. u can expect to pay bout 1k + 200-300 petrol. u can find accomodation in kota damansara that can be close to school and office.

3. there r indian restaurants that sell veg and nonveg food. and spices are easily available.

Hi carlyle...
Thanks for the reply..
Yeah, initially I am thinking of finding a place to stay somewhere near Kota Damansara only. May be later I can consider moving farther away. BTW, schools take admission at what age? My son is just 2.5 yrs old, so I am looking at some play school or nursery or pre-KG types.

good plan dropath. get settled and then review ur options. a good place to see properties is iproperty.com.my.

grade 1 begins at age 6. kindergarten and reception stage at ages 4 & 5 respectively. many good nurseries in mont kiara area which is 10 mins drive from kota damansara. my pref is childrens discovery house, which is a good montessorie nursery.

2.5 years old and school soon! Madness

Research shows formal schooling before 7 is damaging and learning to write before 7 damages the formation of bones in the hand. In Germany they start at 7 and have one of the best systems in the world. I started school at 5 and spent two years just playing. That is what children should be doing!

I strongly suggest a large dose of play, being read to by parents and if a school a montesori one at least.

Hi,

As for your salary, I think you can live decently in KL.

As for kids 2.5 years old and above, potentially you will be looking at 700 - 1500 per month. If you are considering private international school, it would cost considerably more. Since you will be residing in Kota Damansara, you might be interested to check out Desa Park City International School (15 minutes from Kota Damansara).

If possible, do learn how to drive prior to your arrival. Never rely on our bus system due to our congested traffic. With regards to metro train, I don't recall see any train available in Kota Damansara.

For Indian spices, it is easily available in most retail outlets. Malaysia prides itself as a multicultural country thus I don't think sourcing for ingredients would be an issue. On the other hand, there are lots of vegetarian restaurants.

Hope that helps :)

@Nemodot: No... I am not talking about formal schooling. Apologies if my post was misleading. I just wanted to know about play school sort of arrangements - a place where we can leave our children for may be a couple of hours, so that they learn to make friends and share things and stuff.

@Jayson C: Thanks for the info. Yeah, I will be learning to drive before moving there.

i would suggest that u learn to drive in malaysia and get a local license. the style of driving is a bit different here compared to india.

Thanks for bumping this thread up.. I wanted to update my status here since the day before.
The salary negotiations are finally over and I have been assured of 12K RM as salary. No other allowances, except for a personal medical benefit amounting to RM 1k per annum. I am now in the process of doing the documentations. Will be coming back to this thread with more and more requests for info shortly, I guess.. :)
