Am thinking to move to Helsinki from Greece... I have a degree of the University of Western Macedonia, Department of Fine and Applied Arts (five years of studies)and i work for the last 2 years as an art teacher in high and elementary private school. I wonder if my degree is recognised in Finland and what do i have to do to work in public education there (do schools in Finland have art classes?). For start, am trying to learn the language.

Thank you in advance
Christina

hello;
the education system in finland is the top one in the world, to become a teacher you have to pass from a long road fo studying and tests, its not easy to become a foreign teacher in finland...

Christina, this website is a good place to start:

oph.fi/english/mobility/recognition_of_foreign_studies_and_qualifications

The Finnish National Board of Education decides if foreign degrees are the equivalent of Finnish degrees. Sometimes, an academic degree from abroad is considered the equivalent of a non-academic degree in Finland, sometimes it is accepted as the equivalent of a Finnish academic degree.

To become an art teacher in Finland, you need to have a degree in the specific subject, study some Education as well, and have practical experience. Obviously, you need to speak Finnish. These are the requirements for a tenured position.

However, you need none of this to work as a substitute teacher! Students and even mere high school graduates are accepted. But I would not move here on the flimsy hope of finding temp work.

Why don't you contact the FNBE and find out if you qualify, and if not, what more is needed?
