my company wants me to be relocated in KL

I'm an Indian (PhD + 9 yrs exp) and working as General Manager (Technology) for a Malaysia based MNC, posted in New Delhi (taking care of the India operation along with global technology matter). But now my company wants me to be relocated in KL (Malaysia) and take charge of a new project.

I'm married with one kid (2 yrs). My company is supposed to provide accommodation (2BHK apartment) in KL.

Now, I've a few concerns:

1. What should be the ideal Expat salary package (monthly) for my position (GM/VP)?

2. What would be the average monthly expense (inclusive ALL) for an expat family of 2 adults & 1 kid? We mostly cook at home (70%) and live a moderate lifestyle in Delhi.

3. What is the taxation system (whether tax treaty?) for an Indian expat in Malaysia? Currently I'm paying tax in India.

Look forward to hearing from ALL...

Best,
M

Hi sarkar_m,

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

I have created a new topic with your post on the Kuala Lumpur forum.

All the best,

1. For a GM, depending on industry, you should be looking at a minimum of RM12K - RM15K. On top of that, MNC companies also pay for relocation cost, living allowance, transport allowance and etc.

2. If your MNC company has provided you with accommodation, I believe RM500-RM600 per month would be sufficient to cover your electricity, water and internet bills. For meal, given that 70% is home cook, I think you could settle with RM2,500-RM3,000 per month. For your child, it really depends on your decision whether to send him/her to a government school or an international school. Aside from that, I think you can live quite comfortably in Malaysia.

3. As for taxation, you can find out more info on hasil.gov.my

12K-15K for MNC GM!? You gotta be kidding. If less than 25K forget about it.

This guide may help and substantiate your claim if negotiations are needed:

25k bare min. Expat teachers get 15-25k Rm per month in KL. A GM should get 25-40k

There should be two clear elements to your potential package:

1. monthly salary
2. relocation package*

*lump sum relocation allowance (start and end of assignment), healthcare, car/driver/petrol/transportation, home leave tickets, preschool/education allowance, household goods transportation, enhanced holiday allowance (study days), free access to accountant/lawyer for tax returns and any other issues).

Salaries earned in Malaysia are subject to Malaysian Tax.  Once you leave India your income tax liability follows you. http://www.hasil.gov.my/index.php?lgv=2

Be aware that if you arrive after 1 July the tax rate is on the basis you are non-resident = 26% flat rate - no allowances or refunds. Tax years follow calendar years (Jan-Dec).
