Amazing mainland places to live and run a business?

Post new topic

YogiGirl

I am from Alberta and interested in moving to Belize very soon. We're taking our first trip there in December. We are hoping to buy property and run a bed and breakfast / yoga retreat. I'm thinking mainland like Placencia. We as we'll have 2 large dogs and when we do decide to move we plan to drive. Can anyone first of all give me their take on amazing mainland places to live and run a business? How do we go about owning a business in Belize? Also, how do I properly transport my dogs through Mexico? I've read about getting the permit to go into Belize but I'm not understanding the process of taking the dogs into and out of Mexico. Any advise would be helpful. Thank you so much,

David

Hi Yoga Girl - so many questions for one short post. You might want to read through some of the information about bringing dogs into Belize. Other posts have gone into detail about the steps you need to take.
Mexico has its own set of rules, you will need veterinary clearances from Canada, proof of the dogs having updated inoculations etc. If you stay more than 14 days going through the US, then you will need to have a US vet re-do the paperwork when entering Mexico.
Before you leave,  you have to contact BAHA  to advise them that you are bringing in animals. You can do this by e-mail and scan the rabies certificate and health certificate and attach it with the form.
You then pay your fee and get clearance at the border. It is not a difficult process, you just need the right forms filled in.

As far as finding an amazing place to live and work, we'll that depends on your personal tastes. Each area is different. The advice that every expat will recommend - is take it slow. Come and stay for an extended visit before committing to a permanent move.
Some people arrive and love it and never want to leave - other last a few months and can't wait to get home.
Come down and spend some time here - especially in the summer - it will give you an idea of what the rainy season is like.
Read all the blogs and the blogs on other sites too - like FaceBook- that will give you a feel for the visitors/immigration process, the work permits and some of the issues with purchasing property etc. Good luck.
