Hi
I would like to know how arr the police in Malaysia corrupt?  Trustworthy?  Efficient? as foreigners do they treat us the same if we have a problem ?
Thanks for your advices

The police gives priority towards foreigners than us locals :(

But whenever there is a need to lodge police report, it helps to get a english to malay speaking person.

If you are law abiding you need not have anything to do with the police.  They are strong, however, in detecting criminal activity as the local population reports activity to the police.  There is no hiding place in Malaysia.  Go elsewhere if you want to carry out criminal activity.

Crimes can happen in any part of the world. It pays to be extra careful. The police had setup make up booth especially in densely populated areas with foreigners.

Here are some tips:-
1. Avoid going anywhere alone that is secluded, even if its broad day light.

2. As much possible, do not bring too much cash when shopping, apply for a debit card instead.

3. Avoid using a handbag, but if you must, always have carry it on the inside to avoid snatch thieves.

4. Never place your handbag or any valuables in the car unattended. Especially notebooks. Leave them in the trunks if you need to carry one during your travel.

Be vigilant but overall, Malaysia is still a safe country ....

Luckily I haven't had to use the police "services".

But all my friends who had to go to the police, said they are useless, and inefficient, basically... But I'm sure there will be some efficient and dedicated police.

A blunt and sad truth. :(

It is sad that some Malaysian's do not support their own institutions, especially to do with law and order. Nothing is perfect, but it could be a whole lot worse.

The system is a bit different in Malaysia than other countries.  A member of the public has to raise a Police Report (costs about RM30 I think) to effectively make a complaint that they have been the victim of a crime.  Of course, serious crime that affects the populous as a whole, the Police take care of as part of their protection and investigation role.

When the report is made, the Police have the power to investigate, if they have jurisdiction. Making reports is encouraged as it sometimes leads to clearing up multiple crimes by the same person or group.

I have noticed that this is generally the way things happen in Malaysia. e.g. noisy neighbours entails reporting the issue to either security or management office - i.e. they don't patrol and look out for untoward issues.  A resident needs to raise it.

In every country there are issues around Policing as at the end of the day they are only human and make mistakes.
