Hello from the Dominican Republic

Post new topic

Escott

I am a American from Woodstock NY living right on the ocean on the North Coast in Sosua, Dominican Republic.

I feel like I am almost cheating because I am a 3 hour and 20 minute plane ride from here to NY and some of you guys are way out.   However this is a third world country so we suffer more with NO electric and higher priced imports:)

I love it here because the weather is nice and warm all the time with a mean temp of 82 degrees.   When it rains here I don't have to shovel it:)

I found this area taking a last minute flight and loving it.  I am now not only a resident but a citizen with Passport.

I retired from the Real Estate business when I moved here but found myself picking up R.E. when I saw good buys and have since partnered with a Bulgarian Buddy to form a Real Estate Company that brokers properties.

I also met a woman who is a artist that does sculptures in bronze.  She is actually quite famous in Sporting Art and gets many commissions from prominient people in the field.  She just delivered a sculpture she was commissioned to do for the owners of a horse that took the Gold Medal in the last Olympics in Greece.  She is currently working on three other commissions and two are lifesize horses.  She is collected by some of the wealthest people in the world and is in many museums.   She asked me to handle the business end of her business and we have been partners for 1 1/2 years now.   She also does limited edition work and is displayed in many galleries.

So for a retired guy I am very busy.  This time I am busy doing things I am enjoying.  When they become not enjoyable I will stop.

Man I hope I didn't bore you all to death:)  I think I put myself to sleep writing this!  LOL

Regards
Scott

How long have you been living in Dominican republic?

Would you please remove the comercial links in your signature? (we don't accept commercial links)

All the best,

I have been here for 3+ years full time, many more back and forth.  I started working on residency with citizenship in mind after the first two months of visiting here.  Had my permanent residency before actually turning the switch between commuting and not returning to the states..

I actually didn't look at these links as commercial as there isn't anyone here for me to do business with that I was able to tell.  No problem, they are removed.

Thanks Scott :)

Do they actually speak a good English in Dominican Republic? The common language is spanish isn't it?

Escott

The common language is Spanish and I now speak what I call Chicken Spanish!   They don't even speak a good Spanish let alone a good English here:)

A lot of people speak English especially in a resort area however my maid and gardener do not so I speak only Spanish with them.  We communicate without a problem.

Nice thing about living here is I pay the maid 4000 pesos a month and gardener 5500 pesos a month.  It is about 33 to 1 here now down from 50 to 1 for the US dollar.  so Maid costs 130 a month and gardener cost about 175 a month.  Labor is inexpensive.

Yes I heard that life is very cheap in D.R. (I met a lot of people from DR in Spain)

Can you feel integrated even if you don't speak a good Spanish?

I forgot to tell to something: you should add your blog address in profile > personal and locate yourself on the user map (you'll be the first member in the Carribean ;) )

We have a big vibrant Expat community here and English is the first language amoung us.  Depends where you are on the Island actually to answer your question.

I am having a US Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday where 100 people will come and eat dinner and a hundred more will come for drinks and then I am having a Childrens Benefit Auction to benefit the children (Dominican) of the North Coast after.  We started the auction online at the largest web portal about the Dominican Republic called DR1.com and have already raised over 5000 US dollars which is HUGE here.  I will now do this every year.  My first Auction but my 6th Dinner.  399 pesos ($12 bux) and 74 pesos from every meal goes to the auction proceeds.

My language skills have just started picking up.  I was comfortable the first time here although I needed some help from my friends at times to deal with some aspects of life.  Now I provide the help.

Thanks for the site tips and I think I got it right now:)
