I searched and searched with little luck... does anyone know how I can get a tetanus shot? I rusty mattress spring punctured my skin last weekend and I am concerned. I realize there is private and public healthcare here but seeing that I don't have a job yet I need info on how to obtain public healthcare for this treatment urgently..... thanks.

Hi Matt,

You can get a tetanus shot free at any UPA (Unidade de Pronto Atendimento) or Emergeny ward at a hospital. Just tell them you have a puncture wound caused by rusty metal and they'll fix you up with one right away. I presume you will be taking your partner along so there won't be any language problem. (perfuração com metal enferrujado). Tetanus vaccinations usually are good for about 10 years so if you've had one before I wouldn't be too worried if I were you.

If you haven't already obtained your SUS Card (Sistema Única da Saúde) ask them to tell you how to apply for it. Usually you only have to take some proof of address (not necessarily with your name on it) to the City Hall or to a Posto de Saúde and apply there.

Any public hospital.  I remember 3 or so in Manaus.
