Hi everyone, my name is Nader. I'm Master student in the Islamic university Malaysia namely as IIUM.
My Specialist is international law, I came to Kuala Lumpur in January 2012.

Nowadays, I'm planing to move to France, I hope to do my Phd there. Unfortunately, I do know any word in frensh, so I need to study here at least one term.

For any question about Malaysia I'm ready to answer..
Thanks
Nader

One of the very best ways to quickly get to know French is following the Michel Thomas course. I think you can get a couple of chapters for free here:

amazon.co.uk/Michel-Thomas-Method-Introductory-Unabridged/dp/B002SQ7C5A/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_3

It is basically conversational French and well explained with two learners practicing so you hear their errors and learn from them as well.  There is some background literature and dictionaries available too. It is possible to earn some useful basic stuff in about 6 weeks. I am currently refreshing my quite good skills by reusing the CDs - so always useful...!

If you want another taster, go to his website and download it from there.

If you like the style of learning, the whole set can also be purchased 2nd hand for not much money:

amazon.co.uk/Total-French-Michel-Thomas-Method/dp/1444133020/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_4

If you need written French as well, then translating from online text can be useful - but as a written language, it is more difficult to learn:

You must be joking! Want to do a phd in french and can't speak the language. I suggest you stop smoking the wacky backy and try something else lol

I mean seriously this is a plan doomed to massive failure

Why not, how long it will take to learn Frensh? One year? Two years?
Nothing impossible in this life..
Thanks for your support 😋

Hi Nader

I really wounder, how to connect ISLAMIC STUDIES in french? Malaysia is well known for at least their ISLAMIC BANKING , if not for SHARIAH LAWS,,, why France ? and french,,, Do you have any hidden agenda ? it looks it would be a failure, French is not a language that you learn at Phd level at your age, I talking from my experience, as i studied few languages while living in Europe. Man!! change your plan to save your time.

God bless you

Gravitas

Two years to learn passable written and spoken French would be OK as long as it is full time studying.

Firstly, thanks miss Gravitas for your support.
Maybe I didn't explain well, my master is on international law which is global specialist I could study it in any part of the world..
The other thing that is I will study the Frensh language for one year after that when I'll join the university for my Phd I should study at the university for 180 hours, which mean about one more year before I could start writing my theses.
In other words that's mean two years between general language and academic practice, in my opinion that's more than enough to learn Frensh language..

Thanks everyone for your opinions

I guess you have set your heart on living in France, however it does seem a difficult choice to make considering the French Language is about as difficult as English. Because the language used in a PhD thesis is complex and technical, you will probably need to get to at least as high a level as your English. The problem with French is that it has so many verb tenses and masculine and feminine genders are reflected too.
