Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any information on opening a shop in Malta, just doing some background work for my wife who is interested in starting her own business in Malta once we get settled.

To be a bit more specific it's to sell wool, patterns etc.

Many thanks

What about a market stall first?
Opening a shop is a big commitment without knowing how much demand there is.
I'm guessing that for a shop you would need to register as self employed or start a Ltd company, so pretty big outlay.

Thought I would start the ball rolling as no one has replied to date!

id say that tearnets suggestion is a solid one and a good place to test the ground... for whatever it is you may wish to try and sell..

beware many shops open and close within 3-6months of opening mainly due to lack of sales research and local shopping requirements.

Seems to be a theme here. I know of two 'non-Maltese' people who run stalls at Zurrieq and another on the Market in Valletta.
At least with a stall she could (determination permitting) go where the business is rather than a static shop hoping for footfall and business coming to her.

If she is as enterprising as you then she cold make a fair do at it.

Good Luck

Loads of useful info at www. businessfirst. com. mt/en (sorry, my first post and sending links would flag me as a spammer).
Good luck to your wife!

Thanks guy's, knew I could depend on you all for good advice.

My wife is not looking to open a shop straight away as we will have too much on our plates without thinking about the business venture.

Once we are settled and I'm working then we can start looking it to it.

To get reliable and up-to-date information to this matter, I would first ask Malta Enterprise

They offer free advisory services for business matters and start-ups.
