Hi! My name is Aneta, I'm Polish. Me and my French partner just arrived to Budapest a week ago, and very soon we will have a baby here. We have just chosen Dr Rose hospital, but I'm surprised that in Hungary you cannot give waterbirth (that's what they said)..! Has anybody of you heard about it?
Anyway, there is a big risk of C-section for me, but I still hope for natural birth..
Tomorrow we plan to visit both consulats to see about registering a baby (when we are not married). Any tips? what to avoid, what mistakes not to make? :)
Also, if you know some good (English speaking) after delivery nurse - here it is probably called védőnő (lactation advisor, taking care for weighing & measuring a baby, teaching to bath etc... I heard there is a few per each area and they come for free) who is not expensive or even comes for free (I have only european social insurance card) - could you please advise me, for area XII? THANK YOU.
keep your fingers crossed :) I hope it will be fine.

Hi Aneta,

I'm sorry, I'm not bringing any useful answers for you, though I hope you'll get ones very soon.
Actually, I was wondering what has motivated your choice of Dr Rose hospital ? (I find it unfortunately very expensive )

First off,I wish you a safe delivery, C-section or not.
I hate to spoil things for you but even if things are stated as free or included in the Hungarian medical system, tips are EXPECTED.
I have heard thru my Hungarian husband who reads allot of news about issues in Hu that a few in the delivery industry have been sued because of strong arm tactics with new parents in the delivery room.
They come right out and state how much they expect to be tipped for service and how much you should tip everyone included from orderly to doctor.
My husband and I both had minor surgeries in HU and he was treated much better by the nursing staff because he spoke Hungarian and they knew he would be a "tipper".
He even brought his tipping funds into the operating room with him so that he would be sure to be taken care of in the theater. Funny to be totally nude and be carrying hundreds of dollars with you, trying to find a place to stash the cash.
With me, they just saw an American without language skills who probably didn't know about the tipping system so they basically left me alone on my own for the 24 hours I was in hospital.
Just tossed me some stale bread  and room temp. tea to eat, bread and water anyone?
I tipped my doctor and planned on tipping the nursing staff but the terrible treatment I got didn't warrant any tips.
I walked out and down flights of stairs on my own after knee surgery.
If I had tipped the nurses I would of be escorted down the stairs at least.
It is best to be clear on what exactly they expect from you and what you can expect from the staff before delivery time. best of luck to you.
Poland isn't that far away from Hungary, have you considered going home for the birth?
