Since I'll be away from my free medical care and paid drugs I'll have to take better care of my health.

So trying to compile a list of what medicines and drugs to pack with me.

- Aspirin
- Tums
- Pepto Bismal
- PMS cream
- 40% deet
- sunscreen
- cough syrup
- halls

stumpy

anti malaria tablets
Imodium tablets
anti fungal foot powder
Eye drops

A lot of "old folks" medicine types since older neighbors and relatives of yours will like those as gifts since any drugs/vitamins from the USA (sorry dude, Canada is part of the USA - people here think the USA has 54 states and there is only one state named California) is genuine and trustworthy.

- Pepto Bismal
- Aspirin
- Halls

I have to say that I have no idea about the medicine but, from my friends' experiences, I think you need to check:

- are you under any speacial medicine treatment? If yes, bring for that first. If no, the next question;

- you may ask you fiancee's help to compare the price/same kind of medicine if those are available in Vietnam with cheaper price or not? From I have heard, some medicine that you cannot get in Vietnam;

- how long you will be in Vietnam? If it's quite long, dont try to bring for the whole time you are in Vietnam, be careful with the quantity of medicine when you pass the TSN airport, customs may need your money...

Ive found ,just from my time in HCMc that most western stuff is avilable, if you want to double check, contact the manufacturer via the net and ask, i need bp medication and can get the exact stuff there + lomotil asprin sunscreen and generally the chemists speak reasonable english also a lot of medicines are world wide distribution :)

-Aspirin, is a definite. You can get it here but very expensive.
-Tums, a definite
-Pepto Bismaal a definite, bring both the liquid and tablets. My cardiologist recommended taking 4 tablets a day for the first month to help your stomach adjust because it also contains a mild antibiotic.
-PMS Cream, not sure anything will help when a woman gets mad at you.
-40% Deet, they have plenty of mosquito repellent here. Not sure how effective it is though.
-Sunscreen, plenty of it here also.
-Cough syrup, is a definite.
-Halls, you can buy Halls at Lotte Mart in Bien Hoa.

I would also recommend Neosporin for the burns you are sure to get on your calves from the motorbike exhaust pipes. If you have sleeping problems a prescription of Zolpidem comes in handy. You can buy it here without a script if you are a foreigner but very expensive.

If I remember correctly you will be living in Dong Nai, so there is a very good pharmacy in Bien Hoa City called Son Minh were you can get just about anything you need.

Ibuprofen.

Yes you can get it here but the idea of having a bottle of gel-caps instead of three individually bagged collections of pills is foreign here.  We give them out to people with headaches, etc. all the time.

So weird here.  Go to a pharmacy with a cough, they give you little bags of eight pills each, and if you have antibiotic allergies, as a lot of us do, they can kill you.

Benadryl
Anything prescription.

You can find just about any medicine you need at any pharmacy, however the trade names often are different in VN than at home and the pharmacists don't recognize the generic names. If there are medicines you may might need I would Google their names and find out a list of trade names for those medicines in Asia. Then you can give those names to the pharmacist in VN.

thanks everyone for the helpful advice. I've compiled my medication list.

There are lots of meds you can't get here at all.
