Some Muslims believe nutmeg is forbidden as, supposedly, large doses can be used as an intoxicant.

You can do a Google search on "nutmeg Islam" for all the debates on the subject.

I don't know if it is available here, but one Salafi source stated it wasn't allowed in the 80s here. This may be why.

Yes you will not find it in the big supermarkets, but its available in small spices shops in Balad and near the main Vegetable market. ( most will not have it but you need to keep looking)

Nutmeg is banned "officially" in KSA and you cannot bring it in large quantities. That being said, I recently brought some back from home and also have found this spice available at Indian supermarkets.

Found nutmeg at Danube!  I was looking for cinnamon and turmeric.  Came across one French brand of spices in small glass jars.  Searched for what I wanted, but also looked at what other spices they had.  The names were in French, and not translated into English, not even on the back.  One of them was labeled "muscade".  Got home and checked on google translate, and that's nutmeg!

I can't remember the brand name, but just go to the spices section, and you will see these little glass bottles of spices, labeled in French.  Quite expensive, around 15 to 25 per bottle, whereas the American brand spices (American Garden and Freshly) are around 7 to 10 per bottle, and the plastic bottles are also double in volume, so they are a lot cheaper.
