There's a gym in Hưng Vường Plaza takes up one entire floor looks very good, but I hear it's expensive.  Appears to have air conditioning, which would be a godsend here.

Place I go to in Cần Thơ there's one guy who gives glares of death when I turn on a fan, closes windows and puts on a jacket to do the treadmill.  I'm thinking he's simply crazy, he has the same body temperature, physics of evaporation, and susceptibility to heatstroke that I do.

Hey Chris. Welcome to HCMC. I just got posted here myself and also looking to meet new people and hang out.

Gym wise...I've been looking at places to stay and most of the apartments I looked at have in-house gyms. If you've already found a place to stay without a gym, sorry I can't be of any help.

If you live around Phu Nhuan Dist., you can try to enroll at 26 Gym, Nguyen Thuong Hien street. I think it's fine with low price (350,000 - 480,000 VND/Month). :)
