Finding a teaching post in Malta

Post new topic

559lkm

My husband and I are considering moving to Malta. I am an educational consultant and I specialise in children with special needs. I work all over the UK visiting different schools and advising headteachers as to their responsibilities concerning the equality act 2010. When I'm in Malta I would like to return to teaching. I am qualified teacher having specialised in French and English. Please could somebody give me advice as to how to go about finding a secondary teaching post? Alternatively I am quite happy giving one-to-one private lessons in either English or French. Any ideas?

Maximilien

In the government run schools I would guess that Maltese would be a requirement for any teaching job.
Private schools may be interested and there are lots of English language schools about, maybe worth contacting one and asking.

This is a list of schools in Malta with contact details, not sure how up to date it is..........

Thank you so much Terry for the link and the advice about the Language schools. You have a good point about the government schools and I do not speak Maltese. Do you know if teachers are paid well in Malta? It's a good job in the UK and relatively well paid bit I don't seem to be able to find out what the salary is in Malta.

Hi 559lkm,

teaching is not a well paid profession here in Malta. As a teacher at a private school you can earn around 14.000 €/year if you find a job. French would be the option as English is the second language in Malta and taught by many Maltese teachers.

As Terry already said your chances at a job of any sort in a state school are minute and with special needs/consultancy even more so if you do not speak Maltese.

Language school teachers with a CELTA degree earn around 10 €/hour for actual teaching time. Most are self-employed and you/or the school will have to a apply for a teaching licence but jobs are readily available in the summer months.

Cheers

Hi Ricky,
Then teachers in Malta  are very poorly paid compared to the UK!

I don't have a CELTA degree so that is going to limit me even more. Maybe need to re-think my strategy.

Thanks for your tips.

Hi Terry you can't put a price on the sunshine!
I have been looking at rental properties and they seem quite cheap compared to the UK so that's probably why the salaries aren't that great!
I love the island and I'm here the moment looking around. Despite the weather being pretty grim here this week, still much better than it is in the UK
will write to send CV to the private schools in the hope that something comes back and I'm going to follow the lead with reference to the language schools too.

Rental properties are cheap and you can negotiate, its a renters market.
Good idea to test out the private schools they are less ridged in requirements than the state schools.
Chase the dream ! that what life is all about.   :proud

Hi 559lkm

I am a history teacher who is looking to move to Malta and have found that any schools seem to recruit much closer to the start of term i.e. At the end of August start of September which is totally different to how things are in the UK.  I have applied for a few jobs in both private and state schools and have found that most require a almost immediate start which is difficult to do when you have other work commitments! So, I have concluded that there are teaching jobs out of there and schools are willing to employ foreigners, but you have to be resident in Malta in order to take up those opportunities!

Hope this helps

Sarah,

That is so much help and thanks for replying. I have just returned from a week in Malta. I have commitments in the UK until term ends in July and I was panicking that it was similar to UK and teachers gave a terms notice but from what you are saying, that is obviously not the case.

It takes some pressure off me as I can therefore look for work now in August ready for September. When are you re-locating?

It's a lovely place to live, I can't wait! I have never lived there though I have family over there. I married a Maltese and up till now he has always preferred UK bit I think I have now persuaded him otherwise.

Rental property seems cheaper out there than here and also the cost of living seems cheaper.

good Luck in what you decide to do.

I currently work in Madrid and term ends at the end of June so I am due to relocate at the start of July.  I will initially be in Gozo for July and August with my parents and then plan to spend some time looking for work in Malta.  I am also considering being an assistant at first until I can find the right role.  I love Malta and it's always been my dream to move and so I am just going to go for it!

:)

Life's too short eh?

559lkm

Are you Maltese?

I agree with you that life's too short so go and get! It's always been my dream too so see you in Malta!

Hi Lesley

No I'm English!

But love Malta.  I studied Maltese history at University and have visited since I was young!  I'm even attempting to learn Maltese here(albeit not that successfully) in Madrid.

If I come across any French teaching jobs in my job hunting I'll forward the details onto you!

Good luck

Sarah
