I'm heading to the kingdom soon and I'm excited about trying the food there. Spent the last year in Asia where street food is a way of life - is there a similar culture in the ME? Can a woman walk through the market and order food from a vendor? Wondering what are some of your favorite foods?

Actually street food is not away of life in Riyadh  except for some poor neighborhood . Yes ,you can buy your own foods some restaurants won't allow you to get inside but u still can buy .traditional foods are very favorable like rise (kabsa), jreesh, mrgog .
If you need help with any thing I'll be pleased to do so .

Kabsa sounds so yummy! Can't wait to try it.
Thanks for the offer of help - will probably need some!  :shy

no street food culture here.

problem is, most of the local and arab restaurants serving traditional arabic foods are for men only, and have no family seating sections.

it is very much a man's world here, unfortunately.  and it is mostly asphalt, concrete, and glass, and highly commercialized.  eating is one of the very few social activities here (others being shopping and mall-crawling), but mostly at sit-down restaurants in the middle to high range, serving various cuisines from around the world.
