12000 MYR is decent to stay in KL for a family of 3 members?

Post new topic

Hello All,

I am currently working in India as IT professional having 9 years of experience. I have got an offer of 12000 MYR per month (including tax) from KL. We are a family of 3 members including 7 month old baby.

I would like to know 12000 MYR is the decent salary to stay in KL? What is the minimum cost of living in KL for a family considering, I need 1BHK furnished apartment and vegeterian (prefably indian) food.

What will be the tax on the salary?

Please suggest me as the cost of living is most important and depending upon that what I can save per month. This will be the main deciding factor in picking up the offer or not.

Best Regards
Yash

The short answer is that if you are only in the country for 182 days in any one year, you will pay 26% income tax (abut 20% otherwise). The cost of living is about 60% higher than living in India, i.e. double plus. The actual salary being offered is about RM8k per month, at least for 2014. Accommodation can cost anything from RM2 upwards, depending on the area and standard of living you are used to. Average is about RM3k. It would be possible to live on the remaining money and perhaps save a very small amount. The question is whether the upheaval is worth it, as many of the contracts are not extended after one year.

I agree with above in KL 12k is very little not big money.

2.5k is cheapest decent place to live and after tax you get 10k (after the 6 months at higher rate). Easy to spend moneyin kl as western prices. It was cheap ten years ago. Now in many ways USA cheaper to live in. After allowing for education and health for families UK is better living standard out of London.

You could save if you never go out, no cinema etc and careful with money. Being vegetarian makes no difference! As you don't need school fees you can save of you live a simple life, chose where to live carefully and don't get a car.

But as gravitas said why? Upheavel worth it? Especially with such a young baby. Of the baby gets sick watch all your savings go! A colleague went to hospital for half a day with flu got 2k bill. A local btw. Plenty of diseases for a baby to catch in kl. Big bills!

Hi ! I'm Rizza working as Real Estate Agent.
Regarding International schools I could give you 2 names, they are located within residential areas in Mont Kiara.  Mont Kiara KL is also an Expatriate Haven.
1. (American) Mont Kiara International School

2. (British) Garden International School

and there's another one if you wish your child to learn French...
3. French International School

Hi Yash,

12000MYR is a good salary for life in KL with family.
Especially if you plan to live a little further away from the city center and cook food at home,
you will be saving a considerable amount on rent and food.

1 BHKs are rare in KL, you would probably find a 2/3 BHK quite easily.
It would cost you around 1500-2000MYR outside city center.
In city center it would cost you between 2000-3000MYR.

Food is quite reasonably priced in KL and should not be a concern.
